Related: About this forumAfter door-dashing almost two weeks ago, my indoor kitteh returned tonight!
I've been beside myself and had given up hope. I put her kitty box outside, reported the loss to the Human Society of Boulder Valley, posted her photo on all the neighborhood chat rooms, and called her late at night, every night. Tonight at 12:30 a.m. while taking the dogs out, I heart a weak meow beside the house. She was hiding in the weeds and very happy to see me. Looks like she's lost half her body weight and is nervous, but otherwise seems ok. I'll take her to vet tomorrow. Before this adventure, the only times she'd been outside were a few other episodes of door-dashing in which she immediately turned around or fell over so I could pick her up and bring her back in. Sure do wish she could talk and tell me how she survived.

(11,686 posts)I have been in those situations with kitties before. Very nerve wracking. There was one time one of our cats was...kind of gone....for a week. We saw her every day but she was trapped in the neighbors garage. She came home skinny and thirsty but she was clean. Already being a big purr girl she was even more when she saw us.

(16,377 posts)Funny, even though she's lost a lot of weight, her coat looks clean. She doesn't look or act dehydrated although she was hungry. I'm wondering if she was stuck in a garage like your kitteh. She is also absolutely exhausted. She is half-sleeping and purring right above my head on "her pillow" as I type.

(11,686 posts)every day through a garage window is that the poor thing talks to you and looks at you expecting to let her out any moment. The pain of walking away for the night. Now, the important question, is her "pillow" actually your head or just really close to it?

(16,377 posts)The worst part of the ordeal for me was the night it stormed so hard. She is so afraid of thunderstorms and I knew wherever she was she was terrified. The pillow is a regular bed pillow above my head. I hadn't had the heart to even wash the pillowcase because it has her fur on it and was comforting to me even though she was gone.

(16,377 posts)I had a feeling she was not alive anymore but couldn't bring myself to pack away her things. Now she's back. People told me not to give up hope, yet I couldn't imagine how she'd survive.

(34,376 posts)That happened to me once, many years ago. We moved about 10 blocks away, and Sal, our gorgeous peach/butterscotch boy dashed out of our new place. Like I said, he was beautiful, but he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, if you get my drift. In fact, he was the dumbest cat I ever had, but he was so sweet. I think his mom was malnourished when she was pregnant. She came to our house halfway through her pregnancy & we began to feed her. Momcat ended up bringing her lone kitten, Sal, to our house, and we adopted them both.
Anyway, we were frantic. We walked between our two places every day calling his name. This was way before microchipping, so we plastered the neighborhood with signs, called Animal Control & the Humane Society every day asking about him. After 10 days, I was almost ready to give up hope, but I gave it one more try. I went back to our old place calling him, when I heard a feeble "meow" coming from under the porch. He had made it back to our old place. I couldn't believe it. Like I said, he was mentally challenged, so I was flabbergasted he was able to negotiate city streets to find his way back. I was impressed, proud, furious, and intensely relieved all at the same time.
He never attempted to dash out again.

(31,384 posts)So happy for you.
We had an indoor/outdoor kitty that would sometimes disappear for a night or two, but always came back. THen he didn't. I called and called during the day and evening. About 10 days later he showed up. No idea where he'd gone.
After our fire--both kitties survived because they were out that night--we eventually rented a house on an adjacent street. Both streets were dead ends against each other. Mouse would want out during the day and I'd watch him going up the canyon and through the brush headed towards the burned down house.Later in the day I'd look out and see him coming back down the canyon headed to our rental house. That guy lived to be 14 and eventually cancer took him. He had some amazing adventures that I wished he could have told to us.

(16,377 posts)I have questions, I can tell you that! So many of my friends have had similar experiences and kept telling me not to give up. Even though I was still calling for her, I really didn't think she was still alive. This is a spoiled princess kitteh with ZERO street savvy.

(4,544 posts)I've had them disappear and be gone for 2 or 3 weeks and then suddenly reappear. I had one that was lost in the woods for 3 weeks. I saw her by the side of the road. She didn't know who I was at first, but I finally coaxed her to me. Another one was gone for 2 weeks in the city because we had a hateful neighbor who would trap cats and then dump them out in the country. This poor guy made it home somehow with a broken pelvis after being missing for 2 weeks. He eventually died because of his injuries (nerve damage), but he was so brave and loyal. I've got other stories, and some about dogs, too, but those are the two missing cat stories that mean the most to me.
All that is to say I know how glorious it feels to be reunited like that!

(16,377 posts)And it does feel glorious except for the lack of sleep. She slept with one paw on top of my head, so if I moved she'd wake up, lest I leave her for a second. She has never been this affectionate, just all over me at this moment. At least I don't have to be at work until 2:30 this afternoon.

(3,920 posts)a few weeks ago. I spotted her slinking into the garage just before I closed the door. I have never seen her looking as forlorn! She was scheduled for the vet that day anyway -- acquired a tick, but no other damage.

(51,448 posts)years ago. Found out she had gotten shut in a neighbor's garage. She, also, was gone about 2 weeks.

(115,681 posts)Years ago one of my cats slipped outside during the winter when the temperature dropped below zero at night. I looked and looked for him but couldn't follow his footprints in the snow far enough to figure out where he went, and then it kept snowing. I was so afraid he'd frozen somewhere. But after almost a week he appeared at the back door! He had dead leaves in his fur and was ravenously hungry, but otherwise he was none the worse for the wear. I figured he'd hunkered down under a porch nearby. As soon as I let him in he dashed for his food bowl and stuffed himself, then slept for hours on a radiator. He never tried to get out after that.

(16,377 posts)Just got her back from the vet. She actually only lost 1.5 lbs. and two of her talons had been torn off, but that was the only trauma. He gave her some sub-cutaneous fluids and I brought her home to rest. So glad it's over. I'm hoping that has cured her of her door-dashing, too!
