Related: About this forumMy poor puppy is at the emergency vet and is probably going to have surgery.
My #1 son let her out of her kennel while I was at work and she got into something so looks like she has an intestinal obstruction. She is five months old and a chewing/eating machine. They are giving her fluids now and are going to see if she can pass whatever is blocking her but it's a long shot. I think she ate one of my knee-high nylons (she loves those) because she got into my closet while she was "free." Sigh. Poor baby. We had a long night of her vomiting. I know my son feels bad about it and I'm going to make him pay me back some of the money which is bound to be around $3K w/o complications.

I hope it all goes well.
Darn little puppies are eating machines at that age!

(22,140 posts)believe the things my puppies ate. They are 1.5 years old now and still manage to swallow one of my hair scrunchies. It always passes, so I hope your puppy will do the same .

(990 posts)I hope the obstruction moves along and right on thru. But my guess there is surgery in puppy's future. Maybe already done.
Zeus Dog chewed and ate any and everything, too. Vet nicknamed him "Hoover" (as in the vacuum) because he just sucked up everything in sight. Even though we were very careful, there were several emergency runs to the vet.

(16,377 posts)Last spoke to the vet around 7:00 pm. They were continuing to give her fluids and watch her. The obstruction looks like it's slowly moving but it still could get stuck. Hopefully she'll take a huge poop tonight, but no guarantees. The vet said that she has not vomited since around 1:00 pm which is another good sign. Fingers crossed.

(990 posts)Should have asked for dog support when the ex left 8 months he brought this dog to live with us.
The real question is why did he leave his dog with me. And why didn't I insist he take Zeus or find him a new home. Answer : haven't a clue. All I know is Zeus is my buddy and protector, and I am glad he is with me....most of the time.😁

(16,377 posts)Just spoke to another vet who took over the night shift in the ER and she is hopeful. She said when she first saw the XR she thought for sure she was going to have to open my pup up tonight but now she thinks it's in the colon and on the way out. The entire staff is routing for a big poo tonight and they will call me if and when. They've been great.
What kind of pup do you have?

(16,377 posts)I knew they'd be changing shifts at 7:00 so I called for an update and it's good news. Even though she still hadn't pooped, the obstruction was far enough into her rectum that they were able to digitally extract what they think was the culprit: one of those little cloth pouches that you put their dog tags in to keep them from jiggling when they walk. There was also some stuffing from one of her toys. Not sure if that's all and they want to keep her until she poops, so they are going to try to feed her and see what happens. Hopefully, I'll get to pick her up tonight.
Thanks for asking.

(990 posts)But you know the darn thing is, puppy probably won't learn from this experience. She will still eat anything that might be interesting.

(16,377 posts)Vet said that I basically have to kennel her when she's not in my sight for the next three years. She said most dogs stop chewing/eating objects by then.

(32,968 posts)::BUT don't put a cloth cover on top to make it dark so she'll sleep. Ya don't want to know how I learned that.::
I trained all 3 of my crew to crates, they became a den, when I left for work, gave a PB Kong & "go to your room". I left the radio to NPR or classical. Alex heard all of Clintons impeachment trial--f/u Ken Starr. Take the collar off before go to your room, find a phrase that you like and use that consistently. I preferred the hard plastic airline transport ones to wire. https://www.chewy.com/petmate-sky-kennel/dp/101595 similar to this. I liked the plastic over wire1-wire must hurt after awhile & 2- eventually you'll want to wash the insides out for various reasons.
I got the biggest ones b/c a greyhound mix, golden retriever are big dogs. Don't get a greyhound size crate if you have a yorkie, match the size to dog. The slerp pad came out once a week for sunning & airing out.
I hope I'm not being too pendantic, but if you have ? ask away. Goid news about puppy.

(4,033 posts)We had a pup about 11 years ago. We had my MIL living with us and she was old enough that, while she didn't have Alzheimer's, she didn't really have all her buttons. We came home from shopping one day and the pup had gotten hold of the Mrs'. pin cushion and had pulled ALL the pins out of it while MIL watched.
About a month later the pup went out to poo, squatted, and then screamed. Off to the vet. The (who had already told us she loved to see us come in because we always had something 'interesting') examined the pup, said "I know what this is, but you don't want to see this" and scurried off. She came back a few minutes later and said "All done".
It seems that the poor pup had swallowed one of the needle. It had managed to pass through her stomach, intestines, but missed the mark when it was time to pass it out. The needle was still threaded!

(16,377 posts)They were able to get the obstruction out w/o surgery. They did also diagnose a vaginitis and UTI and sent her home with some antibiotics. I'll need to follow up with her regular vet later on this week. I also got more than half my money back which was no small thing. They make you pay for the estimate ahead of time.
Unfortunately, the hospital stay has caused a set-back in her house-training. I thought perhaps the UTI was causing some of the problem, but the vet pointed out that even with all the fluids they were giving her, she didn't wet her kennel once while she was there, so the floor-peeing problem is behavioral. I'm just going to have to keep her kenneled here when she's out of my sight.

Glad she's home. Pics?
