a little over 12 years ago my family brought home from the SPCA in Annapolis, MD a little ball of wrinkles named Torpedo. It had been several years since our last dog, Snoopy had passed away, and my sister was ready for another dog but I was not sure if I was. He fell in love with the backyard immediately. <3 He has given so much love and so many memories.
9 p.m. is walk time, no matter what! He will lift his head and look at my dad, and if he does not get up, Torpedo will walk over to him and stare. Don't you know what time it is, Dad? And if still he does not get up, he will go over to the couch and sit next to my mother. And inch closer....and stand over her, looking at my dad. Torpedo is a big boy, over 80lbs and he knows not to sit on people but he is not afraid to do so if it gets my dad moving... He also know if he shows he has a rock in his mouth he will get a treat. He has us trained well....
My sister passed away almost two years ago and part of me is relieved she does not have to endure this. She got to see him the day before she passed and that brings some small peace.
Now he is at the vet, laying in the grass outside. Soon he will be sleeping and no longer in pain, unable to breathe well and be the active puppy he always has been. Going home for the holidays will be hard this year for many reasons. He won't be there to greet me at the door and lean against me for pets. His curly tail won't be twitching in excitement, and there won't be any kisses with that big tongue.
I was able to visit in July knowing he did not have much time. I am grateful for every moment with him.

(9,895 posts)In time, I hope you are able to focus on the happy moments and memories and remember that he was able to live a full life in a loving home. My condolences are with you.

(2,779 posts)It never gets easier. It's hard knowing what is happening now but not able to be there because I am in another state. I go between mourning and smiling over happy moments.

(3,603 posts)So very sorry for your loss.
I think my empathy is on overdrive lately, seems like so many things bring tears to my eyes these days.
I still hurt over my kitty that died in 2000. I had him for 19 years. He was a lilac-tip siamese (white with reddish highlights and blue on blue eyes). I loved him so!!! I was a basket case for weeks after he passed. He is buried in Mill Valley with a view of Mt. Tamalpaias (where I lived at the time). He loved being outside so much.
Later, I rescued a beautiful Siamese kitten from a homeless lady in a wheelchair (with kittens in her lap) in San Francisco. I took her to the vet and she had ringworm, internal worms... I named her Wyrmina (Mina for short). I had her for 17 years. Her passing late in 2018 still hurts. I buried her in my Iris garden, and the next spring that Iris garden had the most blooms I had ever seen. I miss her so much.
My new boy (may he live as long) is the joy that helped fill the big empty hole. There are so many animals in shelters that need someone to love them, and for me, that was the solution to the pit of pain I felt at the loss of my beloved Mina.
I wish you the best. I hope this helps somehow.

(2,779 posts)It doesn't get easier. I still get emotional about Snoopy who passed away 20 years ago. I know I want a pei of my own one day, and I will put myself through it all again.

(5,598 posts)Well said.
I've been there several times, and I'm thankful I was able to share time with these delightful little companions.
I have a Jack Russell terrier just approaching 17 years old, with health problems; I wish he could live forever.

If there is a heaven, it is for pets not humans!!!
Please consider a new rescue. They need you. It sounds like you might need one of them.

(2,779 posts)He deserves a long forever after. Not something I believe in, but for all the pets I want it to be true. Oh i definitely want to adopt a pei of my own one day. They need someone who can care for them since they have so many known health issues.
