Related: About this forumGoodbye Jitters
He was one of three I took into my home in 2003/2004. He was 16 years old and the last to die.
I was going to take him to the vet this morning and was sure they would suggest that he be euthanized. I found him dead when I went down to sit with him for a while before we had to leave. Maybe he understood that I couldn't bear to watch as he left this life.
I said goodbye to him last night and prayed that he would find himself in a place where he could be free and have the life I could never give him.
Jitters, Onyx and Graphite were my friends and companions. They gave me love and comfort when I was utterly alone and had nowhere else to turn. They gave me joy and broke my heart. They all deserved better lives than they had with me.
I hope to see them again. There would be nothing better than to laugh, run and play in the sunshine and finally know that they understand how much I love them.
Thanks for reading this. I needed to let my grief out where someone might acknowledge them and understand what a blessing they were to a foolish old man.

RIP, Jitters.

(115,659 posts)"Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a worn-out coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another."
I found this a bit comforting when I lost two of my cats, ages 14 and 17, only a month apart this summer. I still think I see them out of the corner of my eye sometimes.

(2,113 posts)I was raised with, and have had, dogs and cats my entire life and that is so, so true. (Actually, it is truer to say they have had me. 😉 )
And I'm sorry for your loss, as well, Velveteen Ocelot. Just as I believe that our human loved ones find ways to let us know they are okay after they pass, I believe the same is true of our fur babies. I believe if you think you saw them, then you did. Selfless in death, as in life, they continue to give us what we need.
Peace and much love to you. ✌❤

(8,199 posts)What a hard time to suddenly find oneself without the comfort and companionship of a beloved cat.
I'm sure you gave them good lives: they had each other, they had you, they had safety.
RIP, Jitters.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It is so very hard to have our beloved companions leave us. Please know that they are still with you, loving you. And, as mine have done, they may return, I have sent my babies to escort Jitters into the Summerland.

(33,643 posts)I'm sure you gave them a better life than you're imagining. You know how many kitties and doggies have nobody and live on the streets? They don't care about many of the things we care about. If they are fed and not lonely and cold, I'm pretty confident they are happy.

(28,787 posts)had to buy a cat carrier that was supposed to arrive Friday, and made the plan to take him in over the weekend. The carrier was delayed and that Sunday morning, as he was sleeping on my shoulder as ever, a sound I never heard before came from him. I shot awake and grabbed him, he jerked one time and died in my hands.
He preempted me. Never had a cat who loved me as much as Luke did. Maybe he was simply ready to go, maybe he wanted to spare me the pain of being the instrument of his death.
I'm so sorry for your loss.. I hope you will soon get another pet or three to be your loving companions. They make life immeasurably better.

(14,569 posts)And don't torment yourself about the life you gave them - if it was a loving life, and you gave them attention, food, water, care and love, and they knew you loved them, then that is enough. I mean, look at the misery of homeless animals. If you gave them a loving forever home, then you did well.
Besides, they have all crossed the fabled Rainbow Bridge now. They have become one with Spirit of Cat or Spirit of Dog, whatever they were in life.

(5,810 posts)You are a wise one to realize the pure joy you can derive from giving a loving, safe home to an animal who loves you unconditionally. Many people will never know the peace and serenity that comes from simply petting your fur babies. You have that comfort even as your heart breaks from the loss. Many of your fellow DUers send out our condolences to you.

(20,755 posts)I know this about love, though... Jitters' presence has moved on, but the love exchanged while he was with you, hasn't. It's part of you now and will be, forever.
That sweet presence is irreplaceable, but the love will remain.
sadly,
Bright

(2,809 posts)13 years of companionship with 110 pounds of yellow lab, I so long dreaded the day that finally came. The last 2 years he had 2 surgeries to remove tumors, and I fully believe the California fires here are partially responsible. Doggies, nose to the ground, sniffing in all that fallen ash...

Now I'm 61 years old, planning my retirement. So, last week I finally found a 10 month old husky I have a hard time keeping up with but he's quickly learning with my pet sitter's help while I'm at work. 3 more years he'll be travelling the southwest with me in my RV.

Hang in there. It hurts terribly to lose these companions. I'll always remember Caleb and all the good and bad times we had together. He finally came to me in my dreams, and showed me a puppy laying in a bathtub, cooling off from the summer heat. I fully believe he was telling me he's alright.

(721 posts)They're such good friends to us for so many years, it's so hard to let them go when the time comes. We have no say in it though, but what we do have to cherish is the gift of the memories they gave us.
They do stay in our hearts forever.
