i'd posted about our maine coon and his lack of appetite. we'd been giving him appetite stimulants and took him to three different vets, including colorado state's vet teaching hospital. i thought he'd turned the corner, but i just got the call from my sister. he went downhill quickly and she stayed up with him all night.
my poor baba, you were the sweetest boy i've ever known and i feel like we failed you. thank you for sharing your love with us.

(18,549 posts)We love our friends and they love us back, unconditionally.
When I am gone release me and let me go.
I have too many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be thankful for our wonderful years.
I gave to you my love, you can only guess . . .
how much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
but now it's time I travelled on alone.
So grieve a while for me if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a time that we must part,
so bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me call, and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear.
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then when you must pass this way alone,
I'll greet you with a kiss and say "Welcome Home!"

(389 posts)A few months ago the love of my life (cat-wise, that is) also passed over. It's never easy.

(1,013 posts)Your plate has been pretty full amigo, are the rivers and creeks still blackened? Your baba wouldn't want you to do this thing about guilt, and you know that is true.
A friend of mine wrote after her Mom had died, that somehow she just KNEW Mom was at the Bridge with every single dog and cat and bird she ever loved. Since that letter I often think I too have something to look forward to after leaving this life.

(24,146 posts)i hope the meet him again someday, on this plane or the next.
the monsoons have passed, at least for the time being, so the river's been ok. i'm hoping they can get some mitigation work done up there before whenever the next round hits.

(18,219 posts)don't beat yourself up. How many people would go to 3 different vets, and a teaching hospital? You went above and beyond what is expected to help....and you know, sometimes, everything just isn't enough. Sometimes, it is just time. We have all been there.
You did all you could, and it was just his time to leave. No matter what we do, we will lose our fur babies. Rest in peace, baby boy. And peace to you too, fizzgig.

(24,146 posts)they never found anything wrong with him and that is just maddening. i know that we did right by him, but this one is hard.
thank you for your kind words

(18,219 posts)knowing what took him really wouldn't make this any easier. It isn't easy. I have lost 4 cats, and I knew what was wrong with each one of them---but there was nothing I could do about it. Salivary gland cancer, skin cancer, kidney disease, and well, I don't suppose that I know about the last one....he was hyperthyroid and I had that treated with radioactive iodine and he was doing well. He just needed a broken tooth removed, and had heart failure in the recovery. Each of these hurt me deeply. It doesn't make it better to know. It breaks your heart.
You did all you could. I did all I could. We both lost fur babies. It sucks.

(11,065 posts)You did everything anyone could reasonably do and then some. No one could possibly fault your for trying your best, so please try to give up the guilt. Your sweet boy is at peace now, and now it's time to grieve and find your own peace about his loss.

(24,146 posts)we've buried many of our fur friends over the years, but this is the first time we didn't know why. we found a nice place in the back yard for him, near all our other boys, so he's in good company now.
thank you the kind words

(2,119 posts)all of us in this group have experienced the loss of a beloved four footed companion and we truly understand the pain you are feeling. Don't be too hard on yourself-you did the best you could to treat the problem and it was just his time to go. Remember the good times with your boy-you will always have that.
