In Loving Memory
Our beloved kitty-girl, Penny, departed for the Rainbow Bridge yesterday, aided by compassionate assistance. The vet estimated her age to be at least fifteen.
We adopted Penny and her k-brother, Jake, four and a half years ago. The first time I met her, she was at a shelter where she had languished for five months. I felt a little head-butt against my thigh and looked down to see a beautiful girl with a dainty triangle of pink for a nose. Her very fine white fur, graced by a copper-colored mask and cape that ended in a ginger-striped tabby tail, was the softest Id ever touched. With great charm she beguiled me with her purr-song while sizing me up from the arm of a couch. When I said hello to her, she thrust her lovely face into my palm and my heart melted into a blob of quivering acquiescence. I had been chosen.
Penny was a delight to us. She was Scarlett OHara to her Jakes Rhett Butler, Carole Lombard to his Clark Gable, and with a dash of catnip thrown into the mix she became a grunge/punk clone of a kitty Courtney Love.
Penny was always in charge, always the boss, and she kept both us and her kitty-brother in line and on a tight schedule.
We will miss our darling Pretty Penny, her head butts and drool-y kisses. Penny was always a sweet dreams cat; she slept with her little head next to mine on the pillow. I think that whoever lost her originally must still be shedding tears over this darling girl. She was sociable and liked meeting people, her gentle nature and playfulness will never be forgotten. We will miss her forever. Love never dies.

(389 posts)Jake looks a lot like our Beau (named after Beau Brummel). It's been a year since his companion Cyra died, and he occasionally still meows his way up and down the hall looking for her. I know Penny will be missed.

(12,249 posts)Jake is used to having a boss--he doesn't know what to do with himself today. She is missed, and thank you for your condolences.

But it sure hurts when we lose a source of it.

(18,219 posts)We all know how much it hurts. But to protect ourselves from this pain, we would have to forget about giving our hearts to another living thing----and that isn't an option.

(12,249 posts)It does hurt, but knowing her was worth it. She's out of pain now and for that I am grateful.

(31,922 posts)they are both so beautiful. I'm glad you took video of Penny so you can watch it from time to time. Really sorry for your loss.

(12,249 posts)I'm glad you enjoyed the wrestling segment of our eulogy. It felt strange putting her 'water dish' away. She only wanted to drink water from her rocks glass, which I was required to keep refilled on the coffeetable for her. The floor water bowls (3) were not good enough for her. She either had to drink from my glass or have her rocks glass right next to mine on my workspace. She had such definite ideas about the way things should be.... We miss her.

(12,249 posts)I think Penny may be meeting her original mom at the Bridge. Her story was that she was chucked out of the house where she lived with her elderly companion when the family celebrated their last Thanksgiving in the home and put 'grandma' or auntie in a nursing home after dinner. I can hear it now, "Don't worry about the damned cat, Mom!" She was very well trained when we got her and such a beauty that I'm sure the family probably thought 'someone' would find her and take care of her. Someone did find her and threw her out a car window. She was still sick from URI and eye infections from her time on the street when we adopted her. She was terrified of being picked up, so I know she had suffered cruelty. She was a great cat. I miss her, but if she is reunited with her first love I will be happy for her. If she waits for me, I will be honored.

(11,065 posts)Losing a beloved pet hurts so much. I really teared up reading about your Pretty Penny. And you are soooooo right - love never dies. Pretty Penny will live on in your heart and in all the hearts of those that loved her.

(12,249 posts)She was the official greeter at our home, but if you sat in the daddy chair she would straighten you out right quick. I miss being her second-in-command and that soft, soft fur. Thank you for your condolences.

(21,822 posts)Sebastian has been with me over 12 years and his age is approximated at 16-17. He is in late stage of kidney disease and is nothing but skin and bones. He hardly eats but still purrs, head butts, and occasionally shows interest in a little bit of food. He does a little better after getting fluids subcutaneously.
I talk to him a lot and know he understands some things. I've asked him to tell me when he has had enough and would like to pass gently into that good night. So far, he hasn't done anything that indicates that he understands or that he is ready to go.
I cried Sunday night thinking about it.
It really is a very tough decision to make. I tell myself that he should pass when he is ready, not when it is convenient for me.
So how did you know when to do it?

(12,249 posts)I'm sorry your kitty-boy is so sick. All the symptoms sound far too familiar to me. I found the name of a local woman who makes house calls for euthanasia. I am posting a link to the questions you should ask yourself (and as I found out, the questions the vet will ask you if you take him in for euthanasia)
http://calis-way.com/pages/decision.html
After taking that quiz, we made the appointment. We did not extend Penny's life with sub-Q injections as I have done with three kitties in the past. My heart breaks for you and Sebastian. I hope this info helps you feel better about your decision.

(21,822 posts)Interestingly, your link is to a vet's office not that far from me.

(12,249 posts)The home visit seemed very pricy and our regular vet has been consulting on Penny since last fall. We paid roughly half for her therapy and cremation than it would have cost for the in-home euthanasia alone, not including cremation. I feel for you. Love to you and Sebastian.
