My rescue cat, after ten months, is at "comfort" stage

So first off, I didn't get him at a rescue. I found him on craigslist last December, a family was downsizing.

My dog of 16 years had passed, and i love cats.

They had a barn & farm animals. He was in house basement w 3 other cats I'm told. He was 4 i was told.
Because of covid, i could not go into the house. The husband met me at the door with a pretty siamese boy.

I insisted he put him in my carrier in my car, as to not imprint on him, I was stealing him. It was dark. A long drive.
Once home my kitty turned out to be--emaciated, vomiting every food, major litter box issues, had fleas and worms. & permanently dialated pupils. (That part doesn't hurt, but does give him a doe-eyed look) I was shocked but launched into action.

He's my lucky charm tho, as I got an emailed job offer the next morning. After a lonnnng 2020 layoff.

A few vet appts w curbside drop off, revealed FIV, an infection, and he was much older like 8 or more. Meds ensued. Special food.
He bounced back great. But not much muscle development from his years of malnourishment. He's the most affectionate cat I've ever known. I named him Taishi after a Thai dessert.

He was diagnosed with a tumor on his kidney 2 weeks ago. Bloodwork revealed anemia, kidney issues, pancreatitis, high white cell count, and more. 5 meds. The hope was stablize so surgery could be considered. A long shot.

We cooked for him. He's an alert and strong-willed cat. But wasting. Last night he went into emergency hospital dehydrated & not eating.
They can't see surgery as a real option. He's coming home to comfort care mode. I've done sub cutaneous fluids with a cat in past. It may work for "a time", but not sure.

This cat purrs when held. He purred on way to vet. While waiting curbside in 40 degree weather last night for us to be let in, he purred. He purred on way home 2 weeks ago, after that visit. In his carrier! I'm stunned at this.

Such a hard luck story, for such a sweet cat. We are gutted.

Last friday, he made a trip up the stairs to my husband on his birthday. A few hours later my husband got a job offer in email.

Tell me we don't "find" our pets, or they don't find us. I'm convinced we do.

For however long we get, it's never enough. I feel robbed, I want more time.

But also am beyond lucky. A good luck charm found me, and blessed my life. But I'm just so saddened.

But I am very grateful to you for caring for him.

Sounds like you were both incredibly blessed to have found each other. Keep your baby close and know that he knew he was safe and happy the last 10 months. My heart aches for you. 💔😢

18. Hope so

kinda believe that with animals especially?. Have rescued some wildlife before, and one lady said she believes there are people that continuously happen to find the struggling critters. I feel like there are a lot of those here on DU. ?! Some of the stories are so wonderful.

11. The poor boy. 8 years of neglect and then Taishi found you.

At least his last year of life has been filled with love, security and caring.

When his time comes may he be in your arms and at peace.

He adores people. It just is so unfair the majority of time was so hard/rough.

12. FIV is a killer.

A slow killer.

We are on our second stray that wandered in off the street looking for food, both had/have FIV.

First lasted 5 years, we tried to make life comfortable for him, but in the end, well . . .

Second one, 3 years so far. Like Taishi, trusting and affectionate.
Caught him eating food I had put out for a different cat. Sat next to him, no reaction, stroked him, no reaction.
Picked him up, put him in my arms with his head on my shoulder. He relaxed and melted in. I knew he was a keeper then.

Wish people would get their kittens desexed and vaccinated. But then, some owners who don't deserve cats, need that too. Both desexing and vaccinating against stupidity and irresponsibility.

20. He sounds like a sweetheart

So nice of you to take them in. I had no knowledge of FIV. Vet thinks he was probably born with it. It's really is tragic huh?
We've got a stray we are feeding too. Winter is coming so we are trying to arrange the garage to give him a place to get in. We know he's a neighbors cat, so we shall see. He's out at night and getting beat up. Wish people would do right by their animals, it seems so basic.

And Taishi was a table food thief at first. He was so hungry! I dont know, but i had visions of him getting out of that basement occasionally and going stealth for the table immediately....

the best time of his life. Had you not rescued him he would not have known a good life. It is so hard so just know that. You are his angel.

15. I've had several short-lived rescues

Yes, it tears your heart out, but I keep reminding myself that cats live for the moment, and we made every moment spent in our house count. They were given food, security and love, and their last days were joyful, not desperate.

22. That's a good way to look at it

Bless you for the strength. This is so hard.

Cats ARE in the moment. Our other one we took off my uncles farm. And he was probably slated for a short life there. He's got it so good now, but is 50% aloof. We joke he doesn't get it. But that's the beauty too! Just be a cat.

I'm a get the "working" (short life) barn cat off the farm kind of owner. And it does help to think peace, not despair in the end--is something important.

your precious Taishi, and vibes for healing and comfort for you. You give him love and kindness and safety. Blessings to you.

And Lady Sekmet will deal with those who abused him so.

He is home. Loopy on gabapentin some. But eating and drinking decently. Not moving around much. Have been talking to him quite a bit.

I must google Lady Sekmet.

26. You are equally blessed to have found each other

It reminds me of one of my favorite sayings. Adopt an older Pet and help them remember what it feels like to be loved. It also makes me think of how they seem to know that you have rescued them because they love so much harder then a pet who has had a life of comfort and ease and always been loved and cared for. You were sent a very special soul.
