She'd immediately jump into the litter pan and start digging around, looking for other deposits. It was like I had stolen her buried treasure. I know that's because the person we rescued her from never really cleaned litter boxes. She'd just let them fill to overflowing, occasionally tossing out the contents. So, poor Sophie wasn't accustomed to a daily clean 'facility'. This woman also never took her dog outside so the poor thing just 'did his business' in the house. You can just imagine the mess.

When I first brought in the feral kittens, they liked to gather and sometimes NAP in the litter pan. I lost count of how many times a day I was sifting it. I was glad when they finally stopped.

Has never been a strictly indoor cat so a littler box was something he used on occasion or when it was too damned cold to go out. His primary human used to tell me he would use the box right after she cleaned it like he was waiting for her to do it.

With me he has never done that. Instead, because he has to stay indoors at my new place, he throws temper tantrums where he runs from one window perch to the next, yelling and making every sound in his repertoire and landing loudly when leaving his window perch until he decides that he has to use the box. And then he does the same when he thinks it's time to change the litter or if I have not noticed there was something to scoop (his box has a tall cover over it so I have to actually look inside to determine whether I do or not).

It's funny how each cat has different habits. Sometimes they have different sets for when they are around certain people, as Mikey exhibits. He lets me look at and tend his wounds, I can catch him when he doesn't want to be caught and he'll come to me when I call him faster than when his human does. I had to fetch from the tall grass at the edge of the pasture when it was time to move away, he was wounded* and in hiding. He wouldn't come to his human for several hours. I brought him home and nursed him back to himself but as soon as he was feeling better he was anxious to go out.

* Looking at his wounds and having seen such before, it appeared he had been probably attacked by an owl. There were a few nests on the property and he wasn't paying attention at one point I guess. He was really freaked out by the ceiling fan when I first brought here and he still has issues with it.

he has to give it a test drive as soon as we are done. We have two boxes, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both cats use them interchangeably.
However it's interesting that they go through phases where they mainly use one or the other even thought we maintain both of them clean, scooped daily.
