Has anyone has a dog with angular limb deformity?

We got a half husky - half dachshund puppy from the shelter about six months ago. He's a spunky, active little guy with loads of personality. We're totally in love with him. He's the cutest thing! He has his mom's husky eyes and the long ears, long body and short legs of a dachshund. He weighs about 35 pounds at 8 months.

He was diagnosed with angular limb deformity about two months ago. I guess it's a somewhat common condition in dachshunds. His two front paws turn out but the upper legs look a bit bow-legged. The vet says there are varying degrees of this condition, ranging from mild to severely crippling. With our little guy, it's moderate but is causing him to limp a bit on the left front, which is a little worse than the right. The vet says it's too late to do the surgery they usually do when they find this as a puppy because the bones have probably stopped growing. He says wait until he's full grown and see how he is....if he is still limping we can consider another, similar surgery they do on full grown dogs with this problem. Apparently it's not usually as successful as the one they do when they are younger, but it *might* help.

I'd hate to put him through the surgery if it ended up not helping, but then again, I hate to see him with a permanent limp. The doc says it probably causes him some pain, too. Has anyone here had a dog with this problem and had the surgery to correct this? I'd love to hear how it turned out.
