A VERY rushed job on the kitten shelter (it's starting to rain)

I'll tidy it up and put more wood on the old tarp, just to secure it. As you can see it's already protected on 2 sides and I'm going to do something to close up the north end. I put an old garden kneeling pad in it because Arthur loves to nap on these.

The wide opening faces the west but I might try to minimize that a little. I'm going to close off the other end, too.

Scooter was VERY curious about what I was doing.

And raising it up a little will give Scooter room, should she decide to use it.

I'll be able to do a better job of clearing and placing bedding, once this wet weather ends.

Gwyn is still out there. It's just a very light rain, right now. I can see into the shelter from inside the porch so I'll keep an eye on it to see if it gets used, today. I'm sure that, eventually, they'll love it.

Lots of sniffing around going on. Ideally I'd like to find something I can use to extend the 'roof' to minimize any rain splashing.

The boys are keeping an eye on things, through the window.

No criticism, I put my old clothes in big cardboard boxes for shelter

I have some heavier grade opaque plastic that might just do the job. I can run it beneath the pavers to secure it and hold it down on top with the logs. The back is against the porch windows. I'll find something to close off the exposed end.

It's definitely a work in process!

My first post. I'm a Newby. Progressive grandma from Ohio. I'm a cat lover and have 2 indoor cats. I have 5 feral cats that I feed. About 3 years ago a big grey cat started hanging around in my yard. I would feed him whenever he stopped by. This spring he brought with him a wife and 2 kids. Plus some other guy.
I researched on line about shelters. I took a Rubbermaid container and cut a hole at each end. They don't like to be trapped. They need an exit incase of a predator. I put a smaller styrofoam container inside the Rubbermaid one and cut 2 holes to line up with the Rubbermaid ones. The articles I read said to use straw inside because cloth stays wet. I hope this helps a little. I'm waiting to hear from my local humane society. They offer neutering and spaying. I will have to trap them. So I'm not sure I'll be able to

Good idea! I should contact our local Humane Society about neutering/spaying.

I post a lot about my feline family. 3 indoor (Madoc, Gryff and Arthur) and I feed a varying amount of ferals. Some I've named. I've rescued 8 feral kittens. 2 of mine are from those litters (Madoc and Arthur). I found homes for the rest. Gryff was given to me by my vet when two of my cats died within about 24 hours.

My best friend/honorary sister is coming to visit in a few weeks and she has tons of experience with trapping ferals. I anticipate getting a crash course on how to do it. I'll share what I learn.
