In rebuff to Bloomberg, New York City Council curbs police power

By Francesca Trianni
NEW YORK | Thu Jun 27, 2013 3:42am EDT

(Reuters) - The New York City Council passed two measures to restrain police powers early on Thursday in direct defiance of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has defended procedures such as "stop and frisk" as necessary to fight crime.

One creates an independent inspector general to monitor the New York Police Department (NYPD) over a seven-year period and make recommendations on how it could be improved. The other expands the definition of racial profiling and allows people who believe they have been profiled to sue police in state court.

Both were aimed at restricting the New York City Police Department's use of stop-and-frisk, a policy of stopping, questioning and frisking people suspected of wrongdoing. Minority groups, civil libertarians and some Democratic mayoral candidates have argued that police disproportionately target minorities, particularly young black and Hispanic men.

To his credit, the stop and frisk policy has made NYC's crime rate lower than other American cities. The drug racketeers cannot presume they can carry a pistol to protect their cash and their stash.

However, the policy is racial profiling.

Solutions: (1) legalize cocaine and bring it above ground, and (2) a near total ban on handgun possession.

Funny that- with all the verbiage from MAIG, Bloomberg never stopped issuing handgun permits in NYC,
a city with no enumerated training requirements.

If you're a celebrity, a 1%er, or a retired cop, you're good to go. Everyone else, not so much...

You can only dream of being as organized and effective as the alcohol Prohibition movement was-
and even they failed in the end.

As for the "War on Drugs"-how's that been working lately?

You know, I honestly thought it would have been difficult to come up with public figures as
off-putting to unbelievers as Wayne Lapierre and Ted Nugent- but the gun control movement
managed to come up with Michael Bloomberg...

It's pretty interesting that while all this Stop and Frisk stuff was going on, NYPD neglect led to the death of Kyam Livingston. No her family is trying to figure out what happened, but no one is releasing information. Will you help by signing this petition? https://www.causes.com/justice-for-kyam
