Let's consider this...

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/01/assault-weapons-ban-just-doesnt-have-votes

What we need is effective firearms legislation, not symbolic "gun control". Proposed bans on certain guns largely based on their appearance is almost entirely symbolic. Effective legislation would need to determine who can possess firearms and the only way to achieve this is by comprehensive background checks on all gun transfers.
Magazine capacity is an important issue, no doubt about it. But, in the long term, background checks will do more to stem the flow of guns to people who should not own them.
I think that the country realizes the need for effective legislation. To over-reach on the issue may be squandering precious political momentum.

Effective background checks for all is a big one. Nominal fee for FFL's to conduct for private sales. I am more skeptical of magazine limits and would set it at 20 and not have a magazine extend past handgun grip as they are more easily concealed. I would even institute a voluntary license similar to a CCW where you have a very thorough background check and show training and show this to avoid having to perform NICs at time of purchase. This can even be set to levels for different types of weapons. Ammunition I do not think is a big issue as one box can be enough for a mass killing. Target shooters buy in bulk.

Lets throw some more gasoline on Republican self immolation, make them brandish their guns and they lose political capital. It's not the 90's anymore.

The best way to destroy the Republican party is to put their extremism on display for all to see like Lapierre, Yeager, Nugent, ad nauseum are already doing and the many RBKA extremists on DU that have been served their bad frozen pizzas.

These are red state DEMS who are probably getting an earful from their constituents about another AWB and they're listening, as their supposed to.
Now Joe Biden isn't mentioning the AWB in his speeches, Harry Reid has caved on the filibuster reform, the House is run by the repukes.
Tell us again how the AWB is going to pass into law?

You are saying except the Magazine capacity. If you got the Magazine capacity down to one you will not stop the gun violence. My Glock has a 15 round mag do you feel safer if I had a 10 round mag?
Do you really?

6. I have no problem

with the Glock's 15 round magazine. That is the stock magazine designed for that pistol. I do have a problem with say, an extended mag holding 30 or more rounds.
My point is that magazine capacity is not as important an issue as is effective background checks, and I would be willing to sacrifice the former to insure passage of the latter.

The PS90 has a 50 round mag, the basic AR is sold with a 30 round metal magazine in all but ban states.

17. Effective legislation is legislation that is enforced.

If there is legislation on the books that can prevent a crime but is not enforced, who's fault is it? Maybe we need to pass a law that holds government institutions responsible for enforcing the existing laws? What message does it send out to the populous if laws are selectively enforced?

19. "Universal" bg tests are and have been supported in this group for years...

The problems center on:

1. Funding and effective operation; many people who fail current NICS tests are never investigated, or the paperwork (convictions, mental comp. findings) are not forwarded.

2. Commerce Clause issues: Can the feds require ALL citizens in EVERY state to follow a fed standard, esp. With private intrastate sales? If the controllers at the fed level thought there was no issue, they would have passed a universal NICS in a NY second. Amy suggestions?

3. Aggressive prohibitionist efforts to get at NICS data base end convert to a national registry. This is where a state FOID may be a better approach.

As you can see from at least one poster here, you and this worthy issue may be Scarlet Lettered with "NRA apologist, or "NRA talking point."

Thanks for posting.
