Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumEmily gets her gun...........
well, sort of.
The story of a young lady who decides she wants to be armed in the nation's capitol. To all the banners here, how's this for "reasonable restrictions"? The entire fiasco started on Oct 5th 2011.

The story has the newest posts on page 1. The saga starts on page 2 for some reason.

(15,396 posts)She just wants to play spider woman and slay a dragon in her dream world of survivalist bullshit. Doesn't she realize guns kill people and strapping on a gun or two won't save her. She's just a paranoid who is mentally ill...probably a hidden criminal.

(1,164 posts)She so far, hasn't got one of them red dot sniper scope shoot around corner thingies. But then again, after having to put up with all the obstacles, it may be just a matter of time!

This story literally makes me sick to my stomach, and beyond.
Edited to clarify: While Emily's tenacity is inspirational, what is horrifyingly sad is that so many other women (and other citizens) will be dissuaded from even attempting to own a firearm by a system that was intentionally constructed to be miserable.
MILLER: I will testify before D.C. city council about guns
Through the course of writing the Emily Gets Her Gun series on getting a firearm legally, Ive become all too familiar with the ins and outs of the registration process in Washington, D.C. Now I will have the opportunity to share my experiences, complaints and suggestions with the local lawmakers who have the power to change these regulations.
I will be testifying before the D.C. city councils Judiciary Committee on Monday, Jan. 30.

Maybe this will be the start of reforming the ridiculous requirements for gun ownership in DC.

(1,164 posts)MILLER: Applying to register a gun in D.C.
While my new gun was being transferred to the District from Virginia, I returned to D.C.s Gun Registry Office to turn in my registration application. As you will see in what follows, this should have been simple step, but it took all day. Like everything else in my effort to get a legal handgun in this city has been far more complicated and time-consuming that it needed to be.

(1,164 posts)unconstitutional. The argument in opposition is a no brainer, what other activities can fees be charged for? Certainly not voting, look the hubbub on voter ID, and the voter doesn't have to pay for the ID card.
But, the same people keep getting elected to the same positions, to do the same things. Wash, rinse, repeat.

(768 posts)you need a bulldozer to clear it all. Case in point from the article/testimony:
Above all that, the biggest problem is being a woman and trying to find a way to feel safe while taking a class at a strange mans house. Since the list only gives the instructors phone numbers - but no important details such as address, website or business affiliation - they are almost impossible to investigate.
I dont believe it it right that the DC police require me to go to an armed stranger's house - in another state - for any reason. I already dont feel safe. Thats why I wanted a gun in the first place and still do.

What is the point? Because she went to a Republican for help in a situation where Republicans are tenacious. Should we hate and vilify her because of her request to him? I think Newts scum but if you hatred blinds you so much that you can't see past Newt and see this woman's plight, well that's unfortunate for you.
I mean Obama's had to work with Republicans in the past to get stuff done, should we hate and vilify President Obama because associates with the icky Republicans. Its a very childish attitude to have.

(1,164 posts)Yet things are still never as simple as they seem when it comes to District gun regulations. I had to delve further into the convoluted and undocumented laws and rules before I could actually bring my gun home.

Every step of the way, just more obstruction. After four months of waiting, there is a ten day waiting period under "the cool down laws".

THE WASHINGTON FUCKING TIMES??
burf my dear, you appear to be in need of an intervention.
Last week it was Glenn Beck's website, now it's the washington fucking times.
If you give us a date and place where we can find you, we can start the deprogramming.
Sooner would be better than later, if you ask me. You are at risk of brain damage, I am fearing.
That Emily, she's a smart cookie, she is:
... I read the entire registration packet and didnt see anything about a lock box. Does it say it in there? I asked.
Well, I dont know it verbatim, said the woman working in the police registry office of the 22-page instructions given out there.
Is this the law? I asked.
Im not going to say its the law to have a box, said the woman working at the police department tasked with enforcing the gun law. But normally when you are transporting, it has to be in some kind of locked container - a box or a back pack.
Ah, I got it. Buried in the packet in Part IV, Section 9, the third bullet point says, When transporting a firearm in a manner other than in a vehicle, it must be unloaded, inside a locked container, and separate from any ammunition.
She got it. Impressive.

(8,614 posts)I don't "propose" anything for your laws.
I will sometimes make recommendations, if asked directly.
In this instance, my interest in finding out what the "this" is, is insufficient to motivate me to do it, so I couldn't respond to a direct request, I fear.
However, since it appears to relate to individuals being licensed to possess handguns, my recommendation would that it not be done, since my recommendation is that individuals not be permitted to possess handguns except in very exceptional circumstances. (Sports shooting and employment-related purposes, for instance, do not require permission to possess other than in the course of those activities).
So I guess my reply amounts to mu. Your question contains the premise that individuals should be permitted to possess handguns, so I must reject it as unanswerable.

(1,164 posts)I finally got my gun in Washington, D.C. I brought it home today from the Districts firearms registry office.
After months of aggravation, hundreds of dollars in fees, countless hours jumping over hurdles, I am now a gun owner and finally exercising my second amendment right to keep arms (bearing arms is still illegal in the nations capital).
http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/guns/2012/feb/8/miller-emily-got-her-gun/
It is simply amazing what this young lady had to go through to be "allowed" to own a gun in the District. Looking back, I learned a lot on the process and what is really ironic, on I titled a a post "Looks as though she's in the home stretch." back on Jan 24th. The "home stretch" lasted just about two weeks!

(1,164 posts)In a CNN story on Emily's getting a gun, a spokeswoman for Brady says:
"One of the reasons we strongly support the District of Columbia's gun laws, is we think that anybody who wants to exercise the responsibility that is gun ownership should be primarily concerned with protecting the lives of innocent people," Caroline Brewer said. "There are obviously a number of different steps and the processes are there because they are trying to take the greatest care to make sure that the people who receive these guns are responsible."
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/08/a-loaded-issue-newspaper-editor-gets-her-gun/
Never mind the "lives of innocent people" who choose to protect themselves but are unable to because of the ridiculous requirements of the DC laws.
This is what passes for logic with the gun banning community?
