Chicago Prepares For New Concealed Carry Gun Law

CHICAGO (AP) -- This city, where violent street gangs shoot it out dozens of times a week despite some of the nation's toughest restrictions on guns, now faces a new challenge: Well-meaning citizens with the legal right to hit the streets with loaded firearms, whenever they want.

As Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn mulls whether to sign off on eliminating the country's last concealed carry ban, the question in Chicago is whether it will matter in the crime-weary city. Will a place that long had some of the nation's tightest restrictions on handguns be more at risk? Or will it be safer with a law that can only add to the number of guns already on the street?

Neighborhood leaders, anti-crime activists and police officials worry about additional mayhem in Chicago. But other residents, including some who live in Chicago's more violent areas, believe more guns will allow them to defend themselves better.

"We just had a weekend where something like 48 people were shot, seven died," said Otis McDonald, 79, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit that ended with the U.S. Supreme Court tossing out Chicago's strict gun ban three years ago. "Now law abiding citizens like myself ... can carry them when they want to and not carry them when they don't want to, and the people out there who will do us harm won't know when we got them and when we don't."

Our "esteemed Governor", the one that hasn't been sentenced to federal prison yet, went on and on this AM about "concealed assault weapons like the ones used in Colorado" he has to keep off the street for the safety of Illinois citizens. He actually said "for the children" 14 times in the interview, some of us counted.

He's going to use an amendatory veto at the last minute by turning the entire CCW bill into a state wide AWB and magazine ban with registration. He tried the same thing last November and got his ass handed to him. Even the Chicago gun control reps told him to go pound sand.

July 9th the court order goes into effect no matter what he does, but I think the general assembly will convene in special session just to shove this up Quinn's ... legacy.

The story is that Bloomie is bringing his big bus full of liars to Illinois to make a big media event out of it when "Quinnochio" vetoes it and try to pressure some reps and senators into changing their vote.

If they do, Mike Madigan will cut them off at the knees for welching on his deal with them to support his daughter against Quinn. It's all just another stalling tactic.

The drag their feet, then they give the state police 180 days to set up the system, another 60 days or so for the training approvals. Pretty soon we're into 2014.

will work out about as well as when he tried to get NV. Gov. Sandoval to sign the UBC.
That pissed me off, I wanted that UBC, but we can partly blame Bloomie for what happened here.
Good luck with your new CC law.

6. Well, Bloomberg will once again threaten Democrats with his $Billions

I expect him to do what he has been doing and what many folks on DU have been applauding. Threaten the General Assembly Dem super majority with spending millions against them in the next election if they don't vote his way.

You see the "Hypocrites Dictionary" says ... if Bloomie does it, it's just the exercise of free speech in a noble cause, if the NRA does the same thing with member's voluntary contributions, they are vile and un-American and need to be audited and crushed.

7. The legal gun owners will be a very small concern.

There will be a few problems slip through the cracks no doubt but for the most part the folks who take the good time and trouble to get a permit won't be an issue. Back when Ohio went with concealed carry permits we had the same sense of panic when the law went into effect. After a year it was a non-issue.
