CSI Battles Unknowns in Allowing Guns on CampusBOISE • If guns come to Idaho’s college campuses, Jim Ellington is buying at least eight bullet-proof vests.
The purchase will take a large chunk out of Ellington’s budget, but as director of the College of Southern Idaho’s security, Ellington said he doesn’t have a choice. His security officers have demanded they be provided with protection in case they come across a violent student with a gun. It’s a hypothetical situation that’s quickly nearing reality, and as such it has created more questions than answers as the possibility grows. If people are legally allowed to have a gun on campus, the desire for vests is valid. However, the news of CCW permittees carrying (by mistake) into airports and restricted buildings (including schools) and all manner of criminals carrying wherever they please, the desire for vests is unfounded.
I find Mr. Ellington's logic rather questionable unless the campus is secured currently with metal detectors and such. That brings up the other possibility. If a law is passed giving public venues and institutions the choice to ban those carrying a firearm, the price of the metal detectors to enforce that will be much higher.  |
