CSI Battles Unknowns in Allowing Guns on CampusBOISE • If guns come to Idaho’s college campuses, Jim Ellington is buying at least eight bullet-proof vests.
The purchase will take a large chunk out of Ellington’s budget, but as director of the College of Southern Idaho’s security, Ellington said he doesn’t have a choice. His security officers have demanded they be provided with protection in case they come across a violent student with a gun. It’s a hypothetical situation that’s quickly nearing reality, and as such it has created more questions than answers as the possibility grows. Permitting guns on college campuses has become one of most controversial bills Idaho lawmakers debated during this year’s legislative session. http://magicvalley.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/csi-battles-unknowns-in-allowing-guns-on-campus/article_2c8cfc79-d94f-55ab-8644-55907652350d.html?comment_form=true

1. So there is no threat from violent students bringing illegal guns on campus?
if he is so scared of guns then he should have bought those vests a long time ago.

3. I see bulletproof vests ...
... on campus police in New York State, a state that doesn't and probably never will allow CCW on campus.
I wonder why that is? |

8. Are the campus police actually city cops?
If so, that is why they are dressed and geared like city cops.

13. No -- they're a separate department.
They are armed, though.

5. Let's see if I have this correct
If people are legally allowed to have a gun on campus, the desire for vests is valid. However, the news of CCW permittees carrying (by mistake) into airports and restricted buildings (including schools) and all manner of criminals carrying wherever they please, the desire for vests is unfounded.
I find Mr. Ellington's logic rather questionable unless the campus is secured currently with metal detectors and such. That brings up the other possibility. If a law is passed giving public venues and institutions the choice to ban those carrying a firearm, the price of the metal detectors to enforce that will be much higher. ![]() |

9. I have two brothers who are cops.
They have worn bullet-resistent vests for every single shift they have worked in their entire careers.
Last week a Minnesota deputy sheriff was saved by his vest. http://mobile.officer.com/news/11318653/bulletproof-vest-saves-minn-deputy |

10. I worked armed security at the 4 Queens Casino in Las Vegas for a number of years
and we had the option of wearing vests, I wore one for each and every shift I ever worked there.
Of course we had to provide our own vests, but it was a wise investment in my opinion and a tax write off, as was my sidearm and duty belt. |

11. If you ever worked outside, I feel your pain.
My brothers both work in Minnesota. Despite our winter this year with 50+ days of -0° weather, we have summers with 90°+ and 80%+ humidity.

12. We had roving patrols in our parking garage and an officer stationed in Valet.
Every shift, we would be assigned to a different sector of the casino or garage.
It got pretty miserable during the summertime if I pulled a garage or Valet assignment. |
