I know he also owned an AR-15; I wonder if it's in a museum now, or whether a descendant or family member owns it now.

In fact, the government sells them to civilians through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, although they are getting rather scarce now. CMP has been trying to import some former-U.S. Garands from overseas in recent years, but has been blocked by gun politics.
