Oregon school shooting: Terror and heroism as victims' names are revealed
ROSEBURG — The gunman whose bullets brought terror to Umpqua Community College on Thursday — killing nine people and wounding nine — came prepared for a much larger massacre.
Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer arrived on the campus with five handguns and a military-style semiautomatic rifle, federal authorities announced Friday morning. Police also found a flak jacket, lined with steel plates, and five magazines of ammunition.
The 26-year-old was wielding a handgun when he burst into Snyder Hall, where two witnesses, one through family members, say he made students stand up before asking them their religion, according to reports.
He died after a firefight with two Roseburg police officers. Harper-Mercer had seven other guns and more bullets in his apartment in the nearby community of Winchester. Authorities, so far, say it's likely he acted alone.
