I recall spending a few hours a day for 10-12 days reloading .30-06 preparing for a trip to a 300 yard outdoor range. How exactly would taxes be collected for that activity?

It has been this way for nearly eighty years, but most people don't realize this because it's included in the purchase price of the gun. So if you purchase a gun with a wholesale cost of $1000, you are paying $110 in excise taxes for a total of $1110 plus dealer markup and state/local tax.

In summary, ammo taxes are already too high.
