Family-friendly gun range offering birthday parties for kids

LEWISVILLE -- Instead of a groundbreaking Friday afternoon, David Prince had a block-breaking.

He and his investors used hammers to crush concrete blocks, similar to what he'll install along the walls of a building inside a Lewisville industrial park. Prince is building what he is proud to call "one of the highest quality state-of-the-art air-conditioned gun ranges in Texas."

There are still office cubicles inside the 17,000 square foot facility, but he's about to transform it all into a 24-lane indoor firing-range aimed at experts and novices.

Real novices.

Eagle Gun Range will host birthday parties for kids.

"One of the reasons we're doing this is, when I had my boys, I didn't have a place to take them and educate them about how to handle a gun safely," Prince explained. "I really want families to be able to take their kids here and teach their young shooters how to shoot safely."

These kids will have adult supervision and will learn how to handle, shoot and RESPECT guns.

and too big of a legal hassle. The thing with some machine guns, it is hard to hit something unless you are really good or really close. Even harder if you are eight.

I shot my first deer with my father and my uncle when I was 10. We ate it. There were no I-hate-gun-owners around.

I was raised in South Dakota where prairie-dog holes are a risk to the cattle and horses. At age 3, I was able to ride my own horse (a gentle one) without any adult assistance except to get up in the saddle. It was not unusual for parents to give their kids sling-shots. In grammer school, some kids got bb guns. Others, like myself, were given .22's. We shot a lot of prairie-dogs.

None of us knew that to be a liberal, in some persons' minds, you also had to be opposed to gun ownership. It was a lesson that we were never taught. For those who are opposed to gun ownership and have never learned gun safety, I agree with them that they should not own any firearms. They might accidentally hurt themselves or someone else.

My gransons - 19, 17, 15 and 15 - were here a week ago. We played a lot of golf and then one morning they wanted to shoot. We spent an enjoyable day at the range. They know range rules and etiquette and followed them. It was a fun, safe and very competitive days. It cost about 4,000 rounds of ammunition.

Or Canada for that matter. As soon as they turn 12, they can buy their own ammunition.

If you go by the poll showing US gun ownership dropping, we are third or fourth behind Norway, Canada, and Finland. If you go by Gallop, we are either first or second behind Finland in gun ownership.

Of course you can go to Australia, where posting in a picture with a gun will get you in trouble with their Olympic committee.

Great idea, gun safety needs to be taught and it is just not as easy to shoot in the countryside as it was back then.
I never feared guns and always respected the safety rules drummed in my head.
No one in any Army unit I was in could outshoot me with one exception and that was a SSG TDY on Army pistol team. When he was around at tank gunnery we would get pointers off him.
A gentleman should know how to safely handle weapons.
We do have the CMP, Civilian Marksmanship Program which teaches young people to shoot.
