i dont know your forum. is fun/lite ok? my son

he is 14, is outside right now practicing with the pellet gun. he has not been practicing his shots out there all year . he is now cause.....

we are going to the mountains to meet up with family. there are two nieces. he does not want to be beat by the girls, when they all do target practice.

i think that is so cute, and a chuckle. target practice is a neutralizing sport.

I read the requirements to post in this forum and the following link didn't seem to apply:

http://www.abcactionnews.com/dpp/news/region_pinellas/man-hit-in-face-injured-by-falling-bullet-while-watching-fourth-of-july-fireworks-show

I've seen this discussed where bullets come down and injure or kill people, but never see an actual case of it, til now.

Edit for spelling

... but we can use some lite in here once in a while.

He could get a run for his money; I find girls can be very good shots. I can just imagine how mortified he would be to be beaten by them

when kids were young, they use to always pit the oldest against my oldest, regardless of me telling them to knock it off. my oldest was more academic, so, they used that on the girl. and she was more athletic. they set something, not very pretty, in place.

personally, i think my boys can handle it better than the oldest girl. so i am rootin' for her.

youth soccer so I know what you mean. I threw out more parents than players.
Competition is good to a point but fun is more important.

Whether it's air rifles or competitive high power.

I'm assuming he's already had someone go over the safety basics and "4 rules" with him already. If not let us know and we'll pass them on to you. Safety glasses are a must, $9.00 at Bass Pro or Cabela's.

He needs to be really consistent with:

1. Sight picture, aligning the rear and front sight the same way fro every shot.

2. Breath control, breathing in and out and letting a half breath out to fire so your breathign doesn't make the gun rise and fall.

3. Trigger control, squeezing the trigger slowly and steady so he's surprised when the shot goes off

4. "Cheek weld" keeping his cheek and eye alignment as close to the same spot on the rifle stock for each shot as he can make it.

5. Follow through. Keep the rifle aimed at the bullseye until he knows where the shot will go.

If I missed anything I'm sure other folks will fill in the blanks.

ya. my hubby is into guns and VERY MUCH into the safety issues and teaching responsibilities. that is the up side in this issue. that is the only reason i allowed my little boys.... teasin, to be able to pick this up. because my husband is so responsible with it himself. that tells a lot.

the boys have walked away from it though, in the last year or so.

thanks.

I've been teaching for years and almost always the women tend to do better than the men.

My daughter (an English teacher) is still a better shot than her husband ... and he's a cop.

I think women just come to the line without the preconceptions that they are going to shoot like the "Lone Ranger" right off the bat and women tend to listen better to what you are teaching them.

Plus they are much better at concentration, which is a big part of successful target shooting.

Have fun and be safe.

My kids only have spring powered airsoft guns but when we shoot paper targets in the back yard we treat it just like a real range. When we are done they 'clean' the guns and we go to the safe to lock them up.

Most people benefit from the occasional lesson by a coach and then follow that up with practice.

I think competitiveness among kin is cute too.

A real good one for air rifle is several pieces of heavy carpet stacked and nailed to a piece of plywood. Ben using mine for years and haven't had to replace the carpet yet. Catches pellets and prevents bounce.

My 14 tr old has been competing at 50yd bench rest for several years. He uses a 22rim fire bolt gun, a Winchester Model 52.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Model_52

It is the same rifle his two older brothers used!

For X-Mas this year I presented him with a AR-15 (223 caliber) rifle that I built for him. He is now practicing to shoot a 200yd beginner match.

Have fun, keep safe, and put all of them in the bull.

Were superb shots. Several were on our Rifle Team. They had multiples awards every single of Small Bore Rifle Medal the NRA issued. Plus ribbons and medals from competitions. Not to mention a boatload of trophies.

When the Team Captain wore all her medals her Shooting Jacket was solid medals and ribbons from collar to waist, BOTH sides. And she was a hell of a nice person. Not the least bit arrogant like some guys would have been. I really respected her. She left JROTC as a Cadet Major and went directly into the Army after High School as a Specialist 4th Class.

We shot my son's new pellet pistol for a good 30 minutes or more. Nice quite fun...

We stayed at the same distance and shot my new SR22 pistol. Added 10 or 15 yards and shot the 22 rifle....fun had by all. Son, Daughter, Wife and Me.

I think it was a costly trip, the wife wants her own Ruger now.
