Have you noticed that the preponderance of the few, really radical, in-your-face, anti-gun folks that blanket us with Google Dumps and elitist BS have proven to be expatriates or have never been US Citizens?
We never have been just like them. We never will be just like them.

(14,732 posts)at least get their title right. It's 'expatriates', not "ex-patriots" (although I'm not sure you see the difference).

(17,502 posts)I know a Canadian that thinks snowbirds who winter Florida are not real Canadians.
COLGATE4
(14,732 posts)is optional'. If Semper Fi wants to refer to a group of U.S. citizens who happen to be living overseas as being "ex-patriots", i.e. former (but no longer) patriots, I think that it a) reflects badly on him and b) is insulting.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)one person he is likely referring to actually has "three reasons the US sucks" on his blog. One of which is obesity (he thinks the obese should be barred from owning firearms.) He ignores Italy, but is silent on misogyny in Italian society.

(8,747 posts)About how superior they are because they have guns bans. That makes them so much more "enlightened" than us ignorant smucks who have been brainwashed by the NRA.

REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
This would seem to be inflammatory, insulting, and possibly xenophobic.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Oct 25, 2012, 12:02 PM, and the Jury voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: Oh, another xenophoic RW gun troll in the gungeon. This forum should change it's name to 'Tiny Penis Republican Lounge'.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: DU is full of people whining about opinions they don't like lately. Hopefully this will slow down after the election.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: If I could vote to delete it I would.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Too funny. For the record I oppose hiding his racist post....let it stand on it's own merit. It has none.

(20,709 posts)It's been a while, but nice to see that the gungeon is still the same.
I mean, what kind of Commie would voluntarily live in a hellhole like Canadia or Yurup, with the death panels and the redistribution... Might as well go around giving an American Apology Tour! Elitists! Real 'murkhins don't travel any farther than the nearest gun show or NRA convention.
And they definitely don't know the difference between "expatriates" and a people who have ceased supporting their country!

(17,502 posts)Check out the big gun show in Nuremberg has every year. I like going to gun shows in Canada.
That said, I fail to see where it is xenophobic. It does raise an interesting point. If either one of us posted on something like "labourunderground" "NDPunderground" "Liberalunderground" would we be welcomed by those Brits and Canadians? I sort of doubt it.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)Only in the NRA bubble is having travelled and lived outside the US considered a negative thing. You should poke your head out from time to time, and join the reality based community.
As for the other question, I'm sure that "LabourUnderground" would be plenty welcoming right up until you started posting right-wing talking points and links to WashingtonTimes articles and pseudoscience from gun blogs. You can't really expect progressives to simply swallow right-wing political views, regardless of what country it is.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)I'm trying to paint you as someone who stereotypes others based on your own prejudices without actually knowing anything about those places or those people. I don't think you actually have traveled abroad.
One thing about using "reality based community" as a advertising slogan. It brings up a red flag, like Fox's "fair and balanced" or "Democratic Republic of North Korea." If you have to use it to sell, it's not true.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)That really hurts gej! You believe every last scrap of NRA propaganda, but you don't believe me!
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)but you do believe every scrap of Brady propaganda, including pseudoscience. I simply asked how is it xenophobic?

(15,333 posts)Additionally, when confronted with evidence that a consensus does not exist, people often assume that those who do not agree with them are defective in some way.[2] There is no single cause for this cognitive bias; the availability heuristic, self-serving bias and naïve realism have been suggested as at least partial underlying factors.
http://www.spring.org.uk/2007/11/why-we-all-stink-as-intuitive.php
To put it a little crassly: people tend to assume that those who don't agree with them have something wrong with them! It might seem like a joke, but it is a real bias that people demonstrate.

The false consensus effect: An egocentric bias in social perception and attribution processes
Lee Ross, David Greene, Pamela House
Stanford University
Evidence from four studies demonstrates that social observers tend to perceive a false consensus with respect to the relative commonness of their own responses. A related bias was shown to exist in the observers' social inferences. Thus, raters estimated particular responses to be relatively common and relatively unrevealing concerning the actors' distinguishing personal dispositions when the responses in question were similar to the raters' own responses; responses differing from those of the rater, by contrast, were perceived to be relatively uncommon and revealing of the actor. These results were obtained both in questionnaire studies presenting subjects with hypothetical situations and choices and in authentic conflict situations. The implications of these findings for our understanding of social perception phenomena and for our analysis of the divergent perceptions of actors and observers are discussed. Finally, cognitive and perceptual mechanisms are proposed which might account for distortions in perceived consensus and for corresponding biases in social inference and attributional processes
Personally, I'd love to raise a family in Switzerland. They've got the kind of family values I like:
The caption:
"This girl, one of 1,585 who competed, is being coached in sharpshooting with the Assault Rifle 90, the Swiss service rifle."
"The score card: Father and daughter, Swiss diversity."

No. You know this because of how they 'look' on DU? Or did you go to the Sheriff Joe Arpaio school of racial profiling? Did they tell you they were non-citizens?
