The legal team of Brig. Gen. Jeff Sinclair thinks the woman who accuses him of sexual assault lied under oath during testimony in a pretrial hearing at Fort Bragg on Tuesday.

With the prosecution of Sinclair dependent on the truthfulness of accuser's testimony, "this is an extremely weak case and it shouldn't go forward," defense lawyer Richard Scheff said in an interview after the hearing.

Sinclair and the woman, an Army captain, admit to having had an adulterous affair, which is illegal under military law. Sinclair denies forcing her to give him oral sex on at least two occasions when she did not want to.

A conviction for sexual assault could put Sinclair in prison and cost him and his wife and children the retirement pay and benefits he has accrued over a long military career.
