Lackland recruits get rabies shots after bats seen in dorm

The Air Force said Sunday it had started vaccinating more than 200 recruits against rabies after bats were sighted in their dormitory complex on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
At least 45 trainees had been given the first of five rabies vaccine shots as the day began as a precautionary measure, but so far none of the fledgling airmen thought to have been exposed to the bats has been bitten.
One suffered a slight case of hives after being vaccinated but is doing well.
The Air Force, in a statement issued Sunday morning, stressed that it did not consider the matter an emergency, but was exercising an abundance of caution in vaccinating the airmen who lived in the facility.
