Presidential Candidate Security Clearance
I've tried to find, unsuccessfully, what the requirement and schedule is, for a presidential candidate to go through a FBI investigation for a security clearance.
There are rules for their security nominees, for the Vice President picks, for other staff members.
It appears to me that after their respective nomination, they should undergo a thorough investigation.
Better to know one is elected if they are cleared to be privy to the CIA, FBI, Defense, etc. secrets.
Wonder if Trump could successfully navigate an investigation. Any connections to the mob? To foreign agencies?
Just say'n.

(314 posts)Could I expect a security clearance if I was under investigation by the FBI?

It does not cover operational issues, covert material or anything overly sensitive. It's more of a 'world view trip'. After that, no more briefings until a candidate is elected. Then the person elected as future President will receive all the same briefings Obama gets.

As far as before the election I don't know, but trying to block out, or make null and void one of the two major party candidates for the presidency, would be one hard thing to carry off.
When the people elect the boss of the military and of the entire executive branch, there is no bureaucrat sitting in a little office somewhere who can negate that election and decide for himself if the president qualifies.
I don't know if an outgoing president would have the power to hold briefings back from a major party nominee , if he does, it sure wouldn't go well for anyone, if it was tried.
