Attack of the feral bunnies!

Some genius dumped two little bunnies here. I think they may be some special kind because they are small and fluffy. One is black and one is white with black spots. They won't come to me but I've never been a big hit with rabbits.

They are running around the people-inhabited part of the ranch. Plenty to eat all over the place and water, too, but I'm afraid they will become coyote snacks. I don't see them for days and then, both of them come out of nowhere at 30 miles an hour crossing a field or the driveway to go? Where ever they think they need to be.

They're not wild animals so they don't know about being quiet or going around. They will try to run right through you. lol

They also don't blend in with anything. The hills here and all of the fauna are shades of brown and gold. These guys stick out like a new Easter hat on Skid Row.

I haven't trapped them because that would be a commitment to keep them. There's no room at any inn that I know of. Ack.

1. there are bunnie rescues

but they usually are pretty sick by the time they get rescued from outside. i guess they get used as a nursery for certain species of flies. yeah, yuck.
i would leave them be, but i am becoming a cold hearted asshole in my old age.

because I can't offer them better.

They don't look unhappy right now. They actually look a little like Goldie Hawn in "Private Benjamin".

3. Here's the black one trying to hide in the shade of a shed.

It's hard to get pictures because they're fast. Maybe I can get one of the white & black one today.

Everyone seems to be dropping by this week. Yesterday there was a wild turkey hen walking on the road with about 10 chicks. Then, there was a California King Snake crossing the same road about an hour later. And this morning, this guy was on my doorstep. He has a hurt paw and brambles in his hair.

I called Animal Control as soon as he was in the carrier because both Mom and I suck at letting go. They better get here quick.

4. Strange visitors!

I've found it impossible to trap (Humane Box Trap) bunnies,
simply because any bait I have tried is less appetizing that what is abundantly available
in the veggie garden and elsewhere. There is just no reason for them to go into the trap.

It might be possible to use chicken wire to build a long funnel that ends at the box trap, and chase them into the funnel, but I haven't tried that yet. That would be peeing into the wind considering the # of wild bunnies around here.

We had a strange visitor a couple of weeks ago too.

Like your bunnies, this strikingly beautiful Dove (Pigeon?) stood out like an intelligent person at a Tea Party Rally. She hung around for a few of days, and we were hoping she would decide to stay, but critters who stand out like this generally don't last very long around here (Hawk bait).

5. That's beautiful.

This seems to be the week when the new chicks get their first parade. Last night I saw a quail hen leading her crew of 8 or so across the dry creek bed to the neighbor's garden.

I think you're right, even if I set up a trap for the bunnies, they have no reason to go into it. They have everything they need. Feral cats don't (or, they have to hunt) so, that's why baiting a trap with smelly sardines in tomato works great for them.

I've put up flyers by the mailboxes in case one of my neighbors lost the Yorkie. I tend to think he was dumped on the road by some idiot because if he was smart enough to make his way to my doorstep, he's smart enough to make his way to his own if it is here somewhere. We're close enough to the road so that you never know who will turn up.

6. That cute abandoned white bunny is now

that Foraging Bastard, lol. I caught it in my corn. Here he is enjoying the night air after I chased him away.



I have recipes for rabbit tamales. He better look out.

7. Oh, and I found the little yorkie's owner.

Walked the hood down the hill on Friday and there were posters up by a store with a picture. Now I can take down the craigslist ad.
