There are a lot of reasons - tons of them, but here's an example of one of them!

Yes, Joseph Fiennes, white English actor, is playing Michael Jackson.

(24,544 posts)Makes me think that MLK might have not frowned on the current reparations debate, huh?

(31,798 posts)Maybe it's better this way? There is no way a black actor is going to go through that transformation for the role. I think? Maybe?
Okay now that I wrote that - Dear Hollywood:

(16,286 posts)reparations for both AfAm and Japanese Americans.
Because I can assure you if the question was do we repay white folks, the answer would be of course, immediately.
And Native Americans are a long long long way from being properly compensated.
One could argue there is no wealth in America, none, that isnt tainted by these histories.

(24,544 posts)That is an argument that few could counter factually.

(37,457 posts)Talk about braindead idiocy and racism! As if there aren't dozens of black actors who couldn't qualify!!!!!!!!!!!

(31,798 posts)I'm not being snarky but this movie takes place in the days of 9/11.
Didn't he already fully transform by that point and time?

(37,457 posts)I would guess that, yes, the makeup would be harder. The hardest part would be replicating his nose. However, I'm confident they could find a black actor with a "narrow" nose, like the one he had after all those godawful surgeries.

I don't believe any make up artist can make it 'happen' with any race actor.

(20,450 posts)black person to play Michael Jackson. There have been MJ impersonators who are incredibly great for many, many years. They couldn't find ONE MJ impersonator who is a light-skinned black? Really?
And what's more, how will this English actor play MJ when he was little and without the skin bleaching, straight nose, and cleft chin?

(2,034 posts)it's the same crowd that do not want to give persons of color who are new writers into the business a fair shot. This is why I'm focusing on novels where I don't have someone telling me my heroes can't be black or gay for that matter.

(89,244 posts)novels are pretty good in learning about how actual life was. especially ones that were written from back then .
the way minorities (racial, religious , and many others) are written give you a realistic view of how things were back then.
i mentioned the way jews are portrayed before and how when you consider the holocaust you know it didn't just come out of nowhere. how acceptable it was to view blacks.
it's worth reading many classics you might have read in school as an adult later in life also. huckleberry finn and moby dick are a couple where the authors had views that were wayyy ahead of their time in their views and sympathy towards minorites .

(2,034 posts)about a black man trying to become an officer in a military that is all white and the trials and tribulation he has to over come going through the academy and his later career. This has been the hardest novel for me to write because of everything I'm putting this character trough has reminded me so much of what I been through in my own life

(89,244 posts)i'm interested in history and one thing which is often hard to find is the view point of those who struggle in society . i guess that's one of the reasons the hunger games books stood out.
have you written other books before ?

(2,034 posts)I have a children's book, "Diary of an African Prince" that is being considered for publication also

(24,544 posts)Because of that, I have no doubt you'll do right by your character and do him justice.

(2,034 posts)Chapter six was the hardest chapter to write and by the time I was done. I was literary in tears at the hard choices that the main character had to make in order to make it to the end of the day. A novel never had that effect on me before

(24,544 posts)Writing is one of the most gut wrenching things a person can do. It takes so much talent to start with a blank page and create something that even puts its creator into tears. I know it will be wonderful.
