Related: About this forumShhh Melissa Perry-Harris ...
In her Race Talk segment (this morning), she's letting the secret out ... that Black folk recognize and use the "Anger Black Woman/Man" stereotyped character, as a tool to navigate in an already racialized (genderized) environment. That when we let out that ABW/ABM, we, sometimes, are not that angry, at all.
Shhh, MHP ... When I let out my "inner-negro", I know the results I am expecting to achieve.
What next Melissa? Are you going to do a segment on how, sometimes, when women cry they are not really that hurt (physically/emotionally) but rather, they are using that stereotype to manipulate/navigate their world?

(8,084 posts)I know I am careful not to perpetuate that ideal, I live in a very white area. Even though it's very blue, I know that I may be the only person of color my neighbors see for weeks at a time.
I can be the ABW, complete with head, neck, and eye rolls, however, I know in the end the only purpose that will serve is to make me look like an idiot and push the ABW narative further.
But I can see her point that some whip it out, because they know, no one will stop them.

(31,810 posts)I've shared this back here before - my husband wonders why we aren't angrier . . . And when we do get angry - he doesn't blame us. We get a lot of well - shit - thrown at us and our voices are ignored. We get ignored for so long - of course when we finally get sick and tired of not being "heard" we lose it.
