(6,151 posts)Ms. Sykes is also highly educated, from what I understand. Didn't she even once work in military intelligence, or does memory fail at the moment? I'm also pretty sure Tracy Chapman has a degree in anthropology, one my favorite subjects. At least that's what she was studying before people heard her sing.
First time I heard her was surprisingly over the PA system in a department store. Low volume, but the opening notes of 'Give Me One Reason' grabbed me like a vise and I stood still in the middle of the floor for the entire song. People looked at me weird, but I was in a pure trance. It hasn't lifted since.
I even got to meet Angela Davis once and make her laugh at my joke; no easy matter, from what I'm told.

(89,246 posts)probably because telling a good joke often involves understand society and telling it in ways where the audience will "get it".
the clip in the OP is a good example.

(27,275 posts)Quite by accident walking past a communist library in Oakland about three years ago. I was so excited to see her that I just started talking about how much she influenced me. She was incredibly gracious and kind, and gently informed that she was attending a memorial service. I apologized profusely, but she said it was okay. What a kind, gracious, lovely, brilliant woman
