In Georgia, reaction to KKK banner is a sign of the times

[IMG][/IMG]

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The mayor was still home when his phone started ringing. The reverend was still down with the flu when he began getting one message after another. Valerie Fambrough had just dropped off her daughter at day care when she heard.

“Have you seen the sign in the square?” a parent asked her on a cold morning three weeks ago. “There’s a Ku Klux Klan sign in the town square.”

And, in fact, there was. Just past the old brick courthouse and across the street from candy stores and antique shops, a large rectangular banner was screwed tight into the cracked wood siding of a long-vacant building on East Main Street. “Historic Ku Klux Klan Meeting Hall,” it said.

It had a cartoonish drawing of a white-sheeted person raising a hand. In addition, there was a Confederate battle flag at one corner of the building and a red flag with a white cross and the letters KKK at the other. They were fluttering in the wind blowing across Dahlonega, and what happened next would become one more pocket of America dealing with a disturbing incident at a time when hate crimes have been on the rise and new brands of white nationalism have been making a comeback across the country.

You really must read it all to understand. "No, no, not here. Hell no."

Some of the men that came to help take down that sign had confederate flags on their trucks, yet they came.

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

Turn! Turn! Turn! (Live Version featuring Roger McGuinn)

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band

[Chorus]
To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time for every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

[Chorus]

A time to build up,a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

[Chorus]

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

[Chorus]

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

there's more of us than them. Those people are ugly on the inside, as well. This crap had been brewing in a toxic stew for quite a while. Trump just brought it to the forefront.

Please applaud the people who who want are standing for love and justice, and to the mayor. The authoritarians are in the minority but they have been emboldened by Trump.

This town depend on tourism and preserving its character, and the sign was put up just to blackmail them into approving a development project.

came to help remove the sign. They do deserve our support; bashing the entire town for the actions of a few would be counterproductive.

I live in a small town not far from Dahlonega. I attended a talk last month on the "forgotten Blacks" in the area and was surprised to learn that this mountain area became home for many freemen starting near the end of the Civil War. The slave-holding plantations were south and east of here, and this was as far as many traveled to escape. In my county, the Black families were gone by the 1920 census, but it was more a matter of economics than inhospitable people. Apart from the gold rush in Dahlonega, the mountain folk were poor; no industry and little arable land. The Klan was not active here, and would not have been welcome.

I was quite surprised this morning to open WAPO and see tiny Dahlonega on the front page. But I was not surprised at the push-back. My daughter graduated from the college there, and I used to drive over on Sundays for us to attend the UU church mentioned in the article. The first blessing of a same-sex union that I attended was in that church; no gay marriages at that time, but their joining was celebrated. Liberals do out number racists and bigots, and they are not afraid to stand up.

They loved their Stars 'n Bars, drank their Jack Daniels and grooved out to Lynrd Skynrd.

One used to tell me how much Klan ass he used kick.
