Black lawmakers call on FBI to help on missing black girls

By JESSE J. HOLLAND

WASHINGTON (AP) — Black members of Congress are calling for the Justice Department to help police investigate a large number of missing children in Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia logged 501 cases of missing juveniles, many of them black or Latino, in the first three months of this year, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, the city's police force. Twenty-two were unsolved as of March 22, police said.

The letter, dated Tuesday and obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, was sent by Congressional Black Caucus chairman Cedric Richmond, D-La., and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the District in Congress. They called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James Comey to "devote the resources necessary to determine whether these developments are an anomaly or whether they are indicative of an underlying trend that must be addressed."

An email sent to the Justice Department seeking comment was not immediately answered Thursday. Richmond said he hopes to meet with Sessions and bring up the issue. No meeting is currently scheduled. But President Donald Trump assured caucus members on Wednesday that he would make his Cabinet secretaries available to them.

D.C. police officials said there has been no increase in the numbers of missing persons in their jurisdiction. "We've just been posting them on social media more often," said Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Rachel Reid.

Is a very real thing. I am sorry to say, North Carolina is a leading culprit.

I am very glad to hear of this action and hope they get the support they deserve. This a a topic lacking in sunlight. My heart's with the families.

Thank you for the post, Eugene.

6. I have been searching for an npr story for hours..

No computer, just my smartphone, and no luck.
Here's the deal :
Today's "morning edition" gave a 'teaser'/blurb, advertising a report coming up in"the next hour"..
My memory -not so great some times- they said 1,000's of missing Black and Latina Girls & Women. ..I hate to post with out FACTS.. but I was shocked/devastated, stopped in my tracks, to grieve & pray for this situation. ..I THINK I heard npr say 6,000 this year ! across US/ various cities.
I had to catch my bus, to my new crappy job full of trumpers, but this lay heavy on my Heart all day.
Finally got Home, & this story about 500 DC Women & Girls. That is horrific enough. But I know it's worse. The fact I can't find the npr story is making me feel crazy. I'll take crazy if it means there are NOT 1,000's of missing Women & Girls.
Any help finding the npr report would be sadly appreciated.
And Prayers, Thoughts for the Missing& their loved ones please, & support for elected representatives, & LEO, involved in resolving this.

A Number Of Police Have Been Arrested For Human Trafficking — Could They Be A Part Of The Missing Girls In DC?
03/24/2017 07:56 pm ET

The increased media coverage of the black and latinx girls missing in DC has started a national discussion on whether the cause is human trafficking. Black lawmakers are now calling for the FBI to investigate. In part, social media has been vital in exposing the cases of many of these missing girls. Although many assume these missing cases have been attributed to human trafficking, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Acting Chief of Police Newsham have stated that there’s no connection between the cases and human trafficking. There are a total of 38 missing persons cases open in D.C. right now.

Is human trafficking a far fetched notion to rationalize the disappearance? It isn’t, and shouldn’t be ruled out in this situation. Many people are wondering how these young girls are being so easily lured. Traffickers sometimes call themselves ‘pimps’, and they’re very good at what they do. Most commonly they prey on runways, girls with low self esteem or with problems at home. Mainly, runways and young people are the ones who are commonly trafficked. Is human trafficking new to D.C.? Not at all, in 2015 the D.C. City council enacted a law that requires “training on human trafficking to new law enforcement officers, social workers, and case workers” . This came after a D.C. police officer was sentenced to 7 years for pimping teen girls.
