Hampton quilting guild creates tapestry honoring 400th anniversary of first Africans

HAMPTON, VA. -- Some quilt squares had images of ships with enslaved Africans, bound in chains.

Other squares were ornate, colorful with outlines of Africa.

Some had images of local landmarks, such as the Fort Monroe lighthouse.

Another was a rendition of the first Africans taking the name Tucker — Antony and Isabel — believed to be the ancestors of the Tucker family of Hampton.

All told, Hampton received via mail several dozen beautifully designed squares — each with varying depictions of themes centered on events that happened in 1619 — created by devoted quilters from around the country.

I try to include photos when I see something amazing, although I haven't used my photo-sharing app or dug into the source code fo a Web page in awhile.

It's a lovely one remembering the past and as one of the ladies said, “We come for the fellowship, the food, the friendship and to learn. What keeps us coming to the guild is the quilting. There are new things to learn, new ideas we bring,” she said.

Second, I can't help but remember Lady Obama's portrait with the quilt on full-on display. The artist Amy Sherald said of the dress, "But once I saw her in that one, I knew that that was the one that, you know, she needed to be frozen in time in. It has a connection to, you know, the art canon. But then it also speaks to black culture. And it reminded me of the Gee's Bend quilts that women made over the course of their lifetimes and were discovered later on in life." http://theculture.forharriet.com/2018/02/michelle-obamas-portraitist-chose-her.html

It's awesome that we decide the quilts are of value because it's culture itself.

Thanks very much, TexasTowelie. You post such all round good stuff!

I wade through some clutter, but when I see something that captures my attention I try to share it on DU.
