2. Love that book... Charles Mann is the author BTW and he has other books as well.

Changes in the Land, by William Cronon
subtitle: Indians, Colonists, and the Ecology of New England

Technically not a history per se, but a good backgrounder on the pre-colonial conditions and what happened when Europeans arrived.
