Barrasso opened hearing today on Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2015

(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (SCIA) Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) opened a hearing on the “Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2015.” This bill would clarify the rights of tribal governments under the National Labor Relations Act, a news release from the Senator’s office indicated.

The hearing featured testimony from Richard F. Griffin Jr., the General Counsel for the National Labor Relations Board,the Honorable Robert J. Welch, the Chairman of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, the Honorable E. Paul Torres, the Governor of the Pueblo of Isleta, the Honorable Keith B. Anderson, the Vice Chairman of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, and Richard A. Guest, the Staff Attorney for the Native American Rights Fund.

Senator Barrasso’s remarks:

“Today the Committee will examine S. 248, the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2015. This bill was introduced by Senator Moran, along with Senators Crapo, Daines, Fischer, Hoeven, Inhofe, Lankford, Risch, Thune and Rounds.

“Tribal sovereignty is an essential key to enhancing tribal self-determination and self-governance. Tribal sovereignty allows Indian tribes to govern themselves, regulate tribal businesses, and provide essential services to tribal Members. Tribal sovereignty brings hope for a brighter future.
