Living Among the Mangled and Fire and Rain

He reminds me of Bukowski so much.

This is from a list I have of books recommended by someone here---I should have kept track of who it was.

I just started it, so I don't know how it will go yet.

Pure escapism. I love her books and am always excited when a new one comes out.

It's about a man investigating a murder that happened sixty years ago.

It was a real page turner. I will be reading another George mystery In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner. I meet D.I. Linley and D.S. Havers from PBS Mystery. One thing I like about the TV shows is Barbara Havers is not portrayed as unattractive as in the books. But the Inspector and the Sargent work very well as a team both on the page and the screen.

I wonder if we appreciate how many excellent books we have available. I fear I cannot read them fast enough. Writing is one area in which our civilization does not appear to be in decline.

Schlocky 'horror', but I just finished a book about slavery and need to lighten up my entertainment for a bit.

After some of these books we have to lighten up.

I read an unusual book about the slave trade—Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth. An odd book that I found rewarding, but.

As you say, 'rewarding, but'. Heavy and disturbing, because it's based on real history.

My wife liked it very much too. I hesitate to recommend Sacred Hunger because of the odd style. But the story is quite a story, an amazing story.
