The Sadow

The Shadow

In the night of the
glowing moon
a deserted horse
caught a glimpse
of a fleeting shadow.

A wild thing flying
across the empty
landscape.
With eyes flashing
white from fear
his galloping could
not escape the
shadow that was
his.

His gait slowed as
he entered the cover
of the apple orchard,
where the fleeting
shadow disappeared.
safe at last he
stopped to nibble
a fallen apple.

"A deserted horse..." novels could be written based on those three words. And the subject reminds me of Bucephalus, Alexander the Great's war horse, who was said to be frightened of his own shadow.

a challenge on a poetry site to make a poem using certain words. How the whole thing came about was kind of a sububconscious that pulled together in consciousness and the whole poem just wrote itself. Or something like that.
