[Beringia]

The sky
Is a suspended blue ocean.
The stars are the fish
That swim.

The planets are the white whales
I sometimes hitch a ride on,
And the sun and all light
Have forever fused themselves
Into my heart and upon
My skin.

There is only one rule
On this Wild Playground,
For every sign Hafiz has ever seen
Reads the same.

They all say,
"Have fun, my dear; my dear, have fun,
In the Beloved's Divine
Game,
O, in the Beloved's
Wonderful
Game."

My dentist is Persian. Many members of his family immigrated here after graduating from a US college or university. He is a very conservative man who will not be voting for Republicans for the first time since becoming a citizen.

We have chatted over the past 30 years about culture, music, theater. During my last visit he informed me that one of his patients had called the FBI because of his nationality. Needless to say, the patient is persona non grata. He is one of the best dentists in Phoenix so this patient was a real fool.
