Tennessee woman wrongfully convicted in rape, murder case finally free after 30+ years
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Tennessee woman wrongfully convicted in a 1988 rape and murder case is finally free after spending decades behind bars.
Joyce Watkins and her then-boyfriend Charlie Dunn were sentenced to life in prison.
The couple picked up Watkins’ grandniece back in 1988 and noticed blood on the child, so they took her to the hospital. Investigators determined the child had been both physically and sexually abused.
Attorneys argued the jurors in the case convicted the couple solely on the testimony of the girl’s mother.
