Related: About this forumBelmont winner Union Rags retired
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2012/07/20/union-rags-retired.aspxBelmont Stakes (G1) winner Union Rags has been retired due to the suspensory injury he suffered earlier this month.
There is no stud deal yet in place for the three-year-old Dixie Union colt.
"No decision has been reached on that," Russell Jones, a bloodstock adviser to owner Phyllis Wyeth, told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I don't know what the numbers might look like. I do know she's made the decision to go forward with this decision for the rest of his life."
Union Rags had breezed twice at Fair Hill Training Center since his Belmont victory on June 9, most recently covering five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.60 on July 6. Although he was "100% sound" following the work, according to Kathy Anderson, D.V.M., Union Rags had some minor filling in his left foreleg after returning from exercising on the morning of July 10. An ultrasound revealed a small lesion on his high suspensory ligament, which is believed to have occurred during his most recent breeze.

OP
What a disappointing year in horse racing. This time not for mediocrity but for injuries. This is why I dont pay as much attention as I used to.

no one sticks around long enough for the fans to become attached to. A few exceptions like Curlin and Zenyatta, but for the most part they are gone before we even know them.

(1,607 posts)5. And in other news: Black Caviar’s racing future up in the air
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2012/07/24/black-caviars-racing-future-up-in-the-air.aspx
Undefeated 2011 Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar is scheduled to emerge from quarantine Wednesday at the Werribee International Horse Center in Victoria, but her racing future has yet to be determined.
The Bel Esprit mare will undergo a series of tests to determine the severity of muscle injuries she sustained during her successful trip to England last month, where she won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Eng-G1) on June 23, the closing day of the Royal Ascot meeting.
Black Caviar's owner Neil Werrett told the Sydney Morning-Herald that he will thoroughly examine all veterinary tests on the champion racemare and consider all advice from trainer Peter Moody and his medical staff before making a decision about her future. Black Caviar came out of the Diamond Jubilee with muscle tears and received a much-needed break during the mandated quarantine period after she arrived back home.
"We have purposely waited until she has got out of quarantine, so that Peter and his vets can have a real good look at her," Werrett told the Morning-Herald. "They will be going over her from top to tail and if there is any long-term damage we will not risk racing her again.
