Lions safety fined for hit on Alex Smith...

Detroit Lions safety John Wendling, who delivered a right forearm to the nose of a sliding 49ers quarterback Alex Smith on Sunday night, was fined $7,875 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for a late hit.

Wendling was not penalized on the play.

The play took place at the end of a 20-yard run. Smith scrambled out of the pocket and gained 20 yards. As Smith went into a feet-first slide, Wendling delivered a forearm to Smith's helmet.

I wouldn't even bother to post this, but I find it interesting that a player is fined $7,875 for hitting a defenseless lying on the ground QB in the head, while at the same time the NFL threatens to fine the recipient of that illegal hit almost twice as much ($15,000) for wearing the wrong cap....

most of Detroit's secondary was backups and he was one of them which has me wondering if the NFL adjusts fines for salary. I find it odd the NFL came up with $7,875, usually they go for round numbers like with the Alex Smith threat.

It reminds me when the NFL fined a Bears linemen $10,000 for a punch the same week they fined Chad Johnson 5 times that amount for giving a ref a dollar.

and at the bottom of the screen, aside from baseball scores (which mostly sucked ), all they had was fine after fine, especially from the 'Skins-Rams game.

Makes me wonder if the scab refs are at all capable of keeping a game under control.
