Beautiful Merion, that sweet little course. All the pundits were so sure that the big, bad golfers with the big, bad technology were going to crush the poor girl, especially after 7 inches of rain in just a few days. 32 years we've be waiting to see the Open back at Merion, and I guess it's been worth the wait.
After two rounds, two men are under par. Only six are even or better. And one of them is an amateur! The last time an amateur won the US Open was 1933! This is a real, old-fashioned US Open, humiliating the best in the world, shot after shot. I just love it.

(17,187 posts)The "other" Open is like that, too. Best golf tournaments in the world. It's especially nice, though, to see it at Merion again, finally. Long time coming.

(4,528 posts)it is hands down the best open. I hated the graduated rough. Thank you Mike Davis for putting these pampered wusses a weekend of horrors. One tournament a year that taxes them mentally and many of them cry like babies.I'm talking about you Zack Johnson. Most of these players are country club kids. Imagine sharing a twin bed with your brother until you are 10. I don't think many of these players could deal with that.

(17,187 posts)... but dude, I watched you both days, and at least three of those putts were pure luck. Of course, that helps win Opens, but lucking out on 30-footers is no way to make a living.

(17,187 posts)Although the first two days there was less of that, and also fewer commercials. The weekend coverage is an ordeal. Two solid hours of yakkity-yak with every pundit saying the same things over and over again.
But the course redeems it. There may be greater courses in the world than Merion (Pine Valley comes to mind), but I've never seen them played. And I may not be around the next time the US Open comes to Merion.
