The Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw have agreed on a seven-year, $215 million deal, sources with knowledge of the situation said.
Kershaw has an out clause after five years.
It is the richest deal for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history, eclipsing the seven-year, $180 million contract Detroit gave Justin Verlander last winter.

(31,156 posts)Keep spending. Just as Eddie DeBartolo's 49er expenditures hastened the NFL to adopt a salary cap, perhaps this will do the same for MLB. It's the only hope for small market teams.

(9,709 posts)and with a pitcher making roughly 30 starts, that means Kershaw is making approximately $1 million every time he takes the mound. Sometimes I wonder when it's going to end.

(16,113 posts)Even though Kershaw is still young (25), 7 years is a hell of a long time to commit $30 million/year for. It sounds like the Dodgers have the cash to spare, though.

(29,322 posts)You'll see more of this as we already have with teams with huge TV contracts such as Angels & Rangers. That is the state of the business of baseball.
Point is they can afford to be wrong.
