NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told NFL Media's Rich Eisen on Monday's edition of "NFL Total Access" that the league's Competition Committee might eventually abolish the time-tested point after touchdown in favor of a brand-new scoring system.
"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell said. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (attempts). So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.
"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about," Goodell went on. "It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six."
Extra points -- with a 99.1 percent success rate since 2004 -- have become an afterthought. Unless you're up against Lawrence Taylor in Tecmo Bowl, there's virtually zero drama attached to the point after. Taylor's old coach Bill Belichick has often opined about about how unnecessary the extra point feels.

Hell, it wasn't too long ago that they didn't even allow two point conversions. And last year they practically ruled out kickoff returns. Do they just want to do away with the placekicker? Do ya think the NFL will ever settle on some permanent rules like baseball?

Maybe require them to drop kick it.

(49,533 posts)then leave a TD worth 6, and abolish the extra point altogether. Teams must go for 2. If they make it, the TD ends up being worth 8 points. If not, it stays at 6.

(29,148 posts)Just kidding. But it would all but eliminate going for two on the fake kick.

(29,148 posts)For rushing, special teams, or defensive touchdowns, it would be whoever scored; for passing touchdowns it could be either the QB or the receiver.
This would make things more exciting on a couple of levels. For one, it would make the snap and hold a bit more unpredictable, thus making for more uncertainty in the kick itself. For another, it would bring out some strategy in terms of who you want to score a touchdown. Most interestingly, it would open up all kinds of possibilities for fakes and so on. Put Drew Brees back on an extra point in a five-point game and there's no telling what could happen.
