Jacksonville has a new NFL owner and a new head coach. But now it also has new PR problems.
Not only was the hire of coach Mike Mularkey panned by critics Wednesday, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan is in serious damage control mode after his comments about what makes a fan of his team.
Khan explained just what it takes to be a Jaguars fan, in his opinion: "I think I can clarify at this point for me a fan is somebody who is a season ticket holder fan for the Jaguars," said the new owner. "We want to hear from people, we want a huge amount of constructive feedback. We need input, but we need that from fans who are season ticket holders."
So the implication is if you're down on your luck and can't afford season tickets in a state hit hard by the recession, you're not a true fan. ................(more)

(2,915 posts)It sounds to me like he's explaining that when he says he wants to hear feedback from the fans, he wants to hear it from season ticket holders rather than just anyone who happens to call themselves a fan but doesn't really follow the team. From a public relations standpoint, it's a disaster because most people will just read the distorted view like this headline provides.

(2,915 posts)Let me explain it a little more for you: People who are season ticket holders have a greater stake in the team's fortunes and are more likely to be informed and less likely to be reactionary. Every single owner in any sports league puts more weight behind the opinions of the season ticket holders than the fans as a whole. None of them say it so bluntly though.

This is the NFL, remember. It's not MLB. The NFL really doesn't even need stadiums. It's revenue base is television.

Or maybe he's just trying to get run out of town. "Los Jaguares de Los Angeles" has nice ring to it.
