Blisters, cracked ribs as world’s longest hockey game concludes (248 consecutive hours!!)

“It doesn’t matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop.”

So said Chinese philosopher Confucius. A banner displaying his quote has hung above an ice rink in Chestermere the last 11 days, while the embodiment of its message about persistence was played out below.

The world’s longest hockey game culminated at the Chestermere Recreation Centre Wednesday night. After 248 hours of continuous play, Team Hope defeated Team Cure 4949 goals to 4691.

The 40 players had about 5,760 minutes of ice time each. They raised $2,001,000 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation in the process, breaking the time (246 hours) and fundraising ($1.5 million) records set on the same rink in 2012.
