Texans release longtime WR Andre Johnson
The Texans officially released Andre Johnson on Monday, ending the wide receivers storied 12-year career in Houston.
Johnson, 33, is the greatest player in franchise history and was the No. 3 overall pick of the 2003 NFL draft. He was the lone remaining player with ties to the franchises expansion years.
After exhausting all options of a possible trade, we informed Andre Johnson that he would be released today, Texans general manager Rick Smith said. No player in the history of this franchise has represented the team, city and community in a more professional way. Andre is a Hall of Fame caliber player and we appreciate his years of service and contributions to our team.
Johnson was informed last week he would either be traded or released. The Texans parted ways with Johnson the day before free agency begins. He is now free to sign with any team in the league.
