Boxer in critical condition with brain injury after Virginia bout

Boxer Prichard Colon was fighting for his life on Sunday after sustaining an illegal blow to the head during a bout in a Washington, D.C. suburb, the fight's promoter said.

The super welterweight from Puerto Rico was injured during his 10-round fight with Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, on Saturday, promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement.

Colon, 23, showed symptoms of head trauma in his dressing room following his bout and was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, DiBella said.

Colon remained in critical condition on Sunday, according to DiBella.

First Colon was docked two points -- not one -- for what was ruled an intentional low blow (before the cup!) Then after Williams turned things around, he got docked a point for hitting behind the head, though he had not been warned previously.

All this sets the stage for the conclusion of the ninth round. Colon's cornermen start cutting his tape off the gloves as though the fight was over. Then they start putting them back on. Meanwhile, the bell rings. Quite a few seconds later, the ref comes over and DQ's Colon for failing to answer the bell. Probably just as well; the few more blows it would have taken Williams to put him away might well have killed him.

And you are right, that had he continued into the last round, it would have been even more terrible.
