Related: About this forumPennington first position player to pitch in playoffs
Blue Jays infielder Cliff Pennington made history in the ninth inning of Toronto's 14-2 loss to Kansas City in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Tuesday afternoon at Rogers Centre, becoming the first full-time position player to pitch in a postseason game.
The 31-year-old utility player had made appearances at second base, shortstop, third base and left field over his eight-year career -- but had never pitched in a Major League game. That changed when manager John Gibbons called on Pennington to record the final out in the top of the ninth inning.
Pennington entered the game with runners on first and second and two outs, with the Blue Jays trailing, 12-2. He served up back-to-back base hits to Paulo Orlando and Alcides Escobar before getting Ben Zobrist to pop out behind the plate in foul territory for his first career out as a pitcher.
Outfielders Rick Ankiel and Babe Ruth each made three postseason pitching appearances, though both players had also logged substantial time on the mound during the regular season.

They should have put him in several inning earlier and rested more pitchers.
