FOXBOROUGH, MA — Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference following his team’s Week 1 win in Arizona that he was very pleased with how Jimmy Garoppolo performed in his first NFL start, as the third-year quarterback out of Eastern Illinois threw for 264 yards and a touchdowns on the road. Asked if the young QB’s performance made him a player Belichick sees as having a future in New England, the coach first grunted and dismissed the question, but then stated: “Have I thought about how fun it would be to cut Tom Brady and win without him? Of course. I think about it every day. It’s exhilarating.”

The longtime Patriots coach cautioned that it is still “too soon” to talk about the future.

“We have the Dolphins coming up this week and that’s where our focus has to be,” he said. “Jimmy only has one game under his belt and we’ll have a better idea of where he’s at with more time on the field and more tape to look at. But, sure, if he plays well again this week, I’ll definitely think about making a switch. How great would it be if when Brady comes back from his suspension, he can’t get into the building because his key card has been deactivated? And then I just throw the contents off his locker out on the street? I get so excited thinking about it. But for now, my focus is on Miami.”

Either way, Brady is set to return Week 5 when the Patriots play Cleveland.

“He’ll be in that game, for sure,” said Belichick. “It could be for us, it could be because I trade him to the Browns … ohmigod, that would be the funniest thing ever. Imagine the look on his stupid face. By the way, he’s had plastic surgery on that face, you know, right?”
