Nathan Chen in sixth place after short program at 2017 World Figure Skating Championships

Chen hit his quadruple lutz and quadruple toe loop, but fell on his triple axel.

Ashley Wagner is in seventh place after the ladies short program.

The Americans fared poorly in the pairs skating program and the competition is complete.

Three American couples will compete in the final group of five tomorrow in the Short Dance competition.

Here is the full results page:

Jason Brown was in 8th place and skated clean. Both American men could move into medals contention with clean programs. The combination of Chen and Brown will need to gain one ordinal position to qualify three men for the Olympics.

I don't have much expectations for pairs skating these days. Kniernam/Kniernam finished in 11th and Denney/Frazier were in 20th so only one pair will qualify next year for the Olympics.

I also missed seeing that Karen Chen (USA) is in fifth place in the ladies competition. Both of them are close enough to the second and third place competitors that they could rise to the medals stand. Mariah Bell is in 13th. If they maintain those standings then they could qualify a third woman for the Olympics.

But I'd read somewhere earlier how the pairs were in good shape to medal. This was before the competition started. If that's accurate, the results are veey sisappointing

Our pairs teams haven't been very strong in a long time, but they are at least capable of completing triple jumps which hasn't been true in the past.

However, the top two ice dance couples could both take medals. Hopefully the competition will be complete before I go to bed.
