They have only about $7 million in committed payroll next year. The end of his contract will likely suck though.

the Giants would be thinking about pursuing him. They probably won't be relevant again anytime soon, and need to focus on building their farm.

and a competent third baseman (Pablo Sandoval ain't gonna cut the muster). That's assuming they can also overhaul and rebuild their bullpen, and keep their players off the injured reserve list; injuries to the Giants were brutal last year.

Can Stanton play center field?

I don't have a case one way or the other except this player can you help you win or not then outbid the others but there are other factors like location or team prestige or playing style(other sports I don't know enough about baseball) that go into free agency which I assume is what we are talking about. For owners deciding to sign someone can be as much about drawing fans as it is about winning, I just mean me personally. Salary caps are a different story.

True, Stanton protects Posey but there would still be major questions at third, first, center, the bench, and one or two spots in the bullpen.

I'm also intrigued to see what happens with hitting now that coach Hensley Meullens is replaced. The Giants have never been a power team during his tenure. The World Series years were built on great pitching -- lots of low scoring games and manufactured S.F. runs -- but not power. I want to see what new coach Alonzo Powell and his analytics can do for underachievers such as Jarrod Parker, Mac Williamson and Brandon Belt first -- as well as the younger players like Christian Arroyo, Ryder Jones, etc.

if the Giants sign Stanton AND if Powell can work magic with the current roster San Francisco could be a force.

And a trade would involve a couple of big ticket players to keep the Yankees under the $197 million luxury tax threshold.

According to ESPN.com, a deal for Stanton between the Yankees and the Derek Jeter-led Marlins ownership group would likely include Jacoby Ellsbury (owed $21.1 million in 2018) or Chase Headley ($13 Million) to help New York shoulder Stanton’s deal, which pays him $25 million next season.

Ginacarlo Staton trade rumors: NL MVP would approve trade to Yankees, report says

Imagine having to decide which spots in the batting order to pencil in “Aaron Judge” and “Giancarlo Staton” … that could be a reality for first-time manager Aaron Boone.

Stanton, who is being shopped by the Marlins, has pegged the Yankees as a preferred destination if he’s moved, ESPN.com reported.

The Cardinals and Giants have been the biggest players in negotiations for the NL MVP. San Francisco even claims to have a deal in place for Stanton, who would have to waive his no-trade clause to complete any move.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has said he wants to get the team’s payroll under MLB's $197 million luxury tax threshold, so making a move for Stanton and the $295 million left on his deal makes little sense from that perspective.

However, the thought of watching moonshots like the one below flying out of Yankee Stadium 81 games each year is enticing.

People believe Jeter is showing loyalty to his old team. It's an interesting theory. Not sure if true, but the deal certainly does appear to be in the Yanks' favor.

bought the team for the purpose of moving it elsewhere. I understand all players with value are on the trading block, assuring the ownership of incredibly small crowds this year which is exactly what they want.

but a little tidbit for a Nats fan below.

Washington hasn't made too many moves this off season, at least not that I've heard of. They just nailed down Brandon Kintzler for three years to shore up middle relief. They also acquired Madson and Doolittle late last season, but having a real ace as a closer would be a bonus.

Otherwise, the Nats have a lot of elite-level pieces already anyway. They just have to put it all together.

32. Jeter proclaiming that he'll make the Marlins profitable this season
Wed Jan 3, 2018, 01:38 AM
Jan 2018

(by reducing the talent on the team, as we know)...

Derek Jeter, the new CEO and partial owner of the Miami Marlins, sees the franchise becoming profitable this season, according to documents obtained by the Miami Herald.

In what is called Project Wolverine, a nod to Jeter's native Michigan, the Marlins executive attempted to prove to potential investors that the franchise will turn a major league profit immediately.

According to the Miami Herald, decreased payroll coupled with increased revenue from ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and a revamped local TV deal, as well as a one-time payout of $50 million that each MLB franchise will receive this season, will carry the moribund franchise to profitability. The one-time payment is the result of MLB's $1.58 billion sale of its controlling stake in digital media company BAMtech to Disney.

25. Jeter is facing the heat over the move

ESPN has a couple of stories on the situation. One mentioning Jeter's insistence that he has to dismantle the team (although he did supposedly try to move Stanton to the Cards and the Giants before the Yankees signed Stanton):

Stanton said he spoke to new Marlins leader Derek Jeter about the direction of the franchise after the former Yankee shortstop's ownership group took over. Stanton thought the club had a good lineup and needed to add pitching. Jeter thought the club needed to subtract assets to rebuild.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/21740420/giancarlo-stanton-glad-new-york-yankees-marlins-wanted-subtract

And this one about Jeter getting roasted in Miami:

And now with the Giancarlo Stanton trade, Jeter, known for delivering championships in New York, has already raised a flag for 2018 in Miami -- a white one.

"You are already hearing the comparisons to [loathed former owner Jeffrey] Loria," said Miami Herald reporter Clark Spencer, who has covered the Marlins for 18 years. "Jeter's honeymoon lasted about a day and a half."

He.never.talked.to.Stanton.

Arrogant.

Stanton was pissed and basically forced Jeter to deal him to the Yankees because LA’s offer was even weaker than what the Yankees ended up paying for him. Like much weaker. And LA was the only other team on his list who could afford him.
